1588.0. "Upgrade failed because of missing EPC$FACILITY.TLB" by COPCLU::GLARGAARD (Nothing but water in my bottle) Fri Oct 09 1992 12:38

    I just tried an upgrade of my ALL-IN-1 V2.4/DANSK system to V3.0/DANSK,
    but after hours of processing, the upgrade failed:

    %A1-I-EPCFACPROV, Providing DECtrace Facility Definition File
    %VMSINSTAL-W-NOFILE, File VMI$ROOT:[SYSLIB]EPC$FACILITY.TLB  does not
    exist.

    %A1-E-RETRY1, Please correct any reported problems before attempting
    %A1-E-RETRY2, to install ALL-IN-1.

    %VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of A1 V3.0 has failed.

    Is this because I once had DECtrace installed, but deinstalled it
    manually later? If so, what does the installation procedure check for
    when it decides to update my EPC database?

    I'll (re-)install DECtrace and try the upgrade again, but it may fail
    because the first attempt was done in non-safety mode, and my system
    might be unusable ?

    Working ... working ...

    Best regards,
    Allan

1588.1The .TLB is part of VMS, so should always be there...IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeFri Oct 09 1992 14:4013
    I was reliably informed by the DECTrace people (and I checked on
    several systems!) that the EPC$FACILITY.TLB file was provided as part
    of VMS, so it would be there even if DECTrace hadn't been installed.
    How did you remove DETrace? If you did it by hand, perhaps you didn't
    realise that the .TLB was provided by VMS and not by DECTrace. If
    there's an automated removal procedure and it takes the .TLB away...

    In either case, one more thing to look out for!

    We just ask VMSINSTAL to update the .TLB, so presumably no-one checks
    if it's there.

1588.2DELETE EPC*.*.* was not very clever, was it :-)COPCLU::COPSPD::GLARGAARDAllan Glargaard, DS @DMOMon Oct 12 1992 10:3212
  Graham, as you have probably guessed, my deinstallation of DECtrace
  was a oneliner:

  $ DELETE SYS$HELP:EPC*.*.*,SYS$SYSTEM:EPC*.*.*,SYS$EXAMPLES: etc.

  Pretty stupid, wasn't it :-)

  Thanks for clearing up how I got my .TLB in the first place though.

1588.3It takes one to know one, as they say...IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeMon Oct 12 1992 11:016
<<<<  Pretty stupid, wasn't it :-)

    About as stupid as me not checking the file was there before trying to
    update it :-)
