ALL-IN-1 3.0
In 3.0, my customer says that intermittently she cannot use underscore
addressing from ALL-IN-1 to VMS, e.g. TO: _KERNEL::BROWNL.
I tried here and got a nice delivery failure error :-

Subject: Delivery Failure Report
ALL-IN-1 was unable to deliver your message dated 07-Oct-1992 03:06pm to
_kernel::brownl
- Recipient has invalid alternate MTS address;
on node GRDIAN <--- why is the recipient not on KERNEL ??
I was sending from node GRDIAN (which in my case had DECNET phase V) to
KERNEL, so I guessed it was a Decnet problem - indeed I cannot SET HOST
to KERNEL from GRDIAN. But the customer can.
I see on page 4-8 of the 3.0 Mail Management Guide that this should
still work. Can anyone confirm whether it does ?
I see in OA$LIB:SPECIAL.COM that it does
$ MAIL/SUBJ=&SUBJ &FILE &TO
Therefore, is it a VMS mail problem ?
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks
Clive

Hi, I have occasionally had this error message. It is indeed a VMSmail problem. If VMSmail cannot connect to the remote node, or if the remote recipient has their VMSmail forwarded to another node which is unreachable, then sometimes this error is generated. I think it's just a catch-all error, hence doesn't give you much useful info. Scott | |||||

Clive,
Of course you should use user@mrgate@node since that gives you much
nicer error messages and keeps retrying if a resource (such as a node)
is unavailable.
Underscore is really just there for other MTS systems other than
VMSmail ... sound of a Dave Shove history lesson being typed (:==:)
