1528.0. "MSMail or Teamlinks ? Why do we sell MS ?" by IOSG::WDAVIES (SOON:wdavies/[email protected]) Tue Sep 29 1992 18:58
A last shot, I leave tomorrow.
Who do the DEC Sales Force work for ?
I just had a conversation with a friendly contractor, who is assisting
Barclays Mercantile in developing an Office Strategy.
He pointed out that despite his best efforts to promote DEC software,
especially in the Office area, DEC Sales strategy is determined to
put Microsoft on DIGITAL customers desks.
What do they do ? They are bundling MicroSoft Office (word, excel and
MSmail etc) with every 486 they sell... I mean, lets hear it for
DECmailworks, Teamlinks, DECWrite for Windows etc, etc...whatever their
flaws, surely if we bundle anything in for free, it should be our own
stuff - 90% of the battle is getting people to use software as well
Bill Gates knows.
Anyway, we leave in good company tomorrow, Ken and me :-)

| I suppose the cynical point of view is that the salespeople get commission on
what they sell, not what they give away, so they have no interest in giving
away Digital products over Microsoft products.
With the current engineering climate in Digital, the situation described in .0
is a real morale booster... NOT. Perhaps someone from sales/marketing could
offer their side of the story?
