1513.0. "Autoforward to distribution list?" by ZPOVC::INDO01::SCHOUTEN (Ap Schouten DEC Jakarta Indonesia) Sun Sep 27 1992 09:03

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    (also posted in MAILBUS notesfile)

This might be the wrong notes-file but I'll give it a try:

We are looking for a (MAILBUS) procedure that allows us to forward
information to a group of people, but with local control of the
list of people. In other words, Autoforward to a distribution list.
Preferrably, this should be a dummy ALL-IN-1 account with autoforward.

However, ALL-IN-1 does not supply this feature.

In the grey old times, I remeber that I have seen a procedure that
automatically executes a DCL procedure upon receiving incoming mail.
However I can't recall the details.

    Can anybody help?
    Thanks,
    Ap.

ALL-IN-1 can execute a command file on receiving incoming mail.

All you need to do is to create your "dummy" account, and set the Mail
Destination field on the user profile form to the name of the command
file. The command file (.COM) must exist in the OA$LIB: directory.

I think that someone has described such a command file which will do
what you want: maybe someone else can remember?

Have a look at the application programming guide in the part called
GUIDE, page 17-9 to 17-14. Everything you need should be there.

1513.3USER defined AutoFowarding possible?NEWVAX::MZARUDZKII AXPed it, and it is thinking...Mon Feb 28 1994 13:3818

I am trying to setup autoforwarding to a distribution list. The list
will be entered by the user as they so choose. I have a PROFIL entry
that runs a command procedure to display a form that will allow the
user to enter the list of choice. The list expands properly and works
as expected when I create a normal message. However after I autoforward
the account to the list, it does not expand. The mail delivery failure
    so indicates....

Give me some ideas on what I am doing wrong, perhaps the behavior of
autofowarding must be ties to a defined list that the PROFIL .COM or
    .CMU file maintains.

Am I to believe that I can autoforward to a user defined list. Is this
    behavior in a PFR?

    Thanks,
    Mike Z.
1513.4Autoforward (really redirection) is meant to be ont-to-oneIOSG::MARSHALLWhen you've got a widget, you don't need gimmicksMon Feb 28 1994 15:154
I think the autoforward address gets used as-is, without any of the expansion
that occurs on EMHEAD. Sorry, that's just the way it is...

I guess you could autoforward to a holding account, then use
a mail filter to mail out to a dist list.

    >>> I guess you could autoforward to a holding account, then use
    >>> a mail filter to mail out to a dist list.

Yes, that is the approach I am taking now, basically recontructing
the message and adding (expanding) the header attributes from the
    sender.

How about TeamLinks/MailWorks or the MAILBUS 400 product set? Can
they support this feature? I am told that this is an X.400 feature
mailing to objects, and distribution lists are considered objects.

     Thoughts on this?

1513.7MAILbus 400 MTA can do itFORTY2::ASHMail Interchange Group, ReadingTue Mar 01 1994 17:397
It can certainly be done by the MAILbus 400 MTA. A distribution list in the
Directory is just another o/r address - the MTA will expand it into its member
o/r addresses.

All you need is a way of getting your message into MAILbus 400!

Grahame, sounds like a subtle plug for XMR ;-)

Well, that's about as subtle as I get!

What was really going through my mind was a TeamLinks client connecting to the
MAILbus 400 MTA on OSF/1 - but I'm not sure how close we are to one of those.

Ok, I'll make the case to sell MAILbus 400 and OSF/1 for a security
package and TeamLinks for the GUI, I'll tack it on as an upgrade for
the mail to distribution list requirement". Heh, heh.

Have you looked at Personal Assistant? This allows autoforwarding
to distribution lists. You can also define rules to exclude certain types
of message (e.g. non-delivery notices, auto-replies, messages sent to
    SUBSCRIBERS:).

    Hope this helps.

    Martin.
