| Hi Glyn,
Can you tell me more about the wordprocessors you use.
There are PC based software products like software bridge which makes it
possible to convert most PC orientated wordprocessor formats to DX format.
There are also soft- en hardware products, like the Shaffstall system from
Shaffstall corporation which can handle conversions from dedicated non-PC
wordprocessors formats to DX format.

| Martin,
The wordprocessor in question is likely to be WANG WP and WANG Office.
As well as any technical advice such as:
- How to convert from WANG format to WPS-PLUS
- How to perform the physical transfer from WANG to VAX.
I was also looking for some guidelines as to the approach that should be
taken or a methodology that could or has been used. For example:
- Determining which documents should be migrated.
- Should they be converted on batch or on demand as they are required.
- etc.
Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Glyn

Sorry about the simple reply before... now I have more information to
work on....
One customer had a WANG system. They were wanting an ALL-IN-1 system.
They are an insurance company, and need to keep documents for 5 years
or more. They were converting from WANG to WPS-PLUS / ALL-IN-1. They
were planning on re-writing / converting all of the Wang Glossary's to
ALL-IN-1 UDP's, and then using an outside bureaux (Network Connections
and Mike Cleugh!) to do the actual conversion of the documents.
Network Connections were going to take a tape in WANG format, and
return a tape in VAX / DX format. Then load these documents into an
ALL-IN-1 V3.0 shared File Cabinet, where the users would then access
them.
If you are converting in batch - then you can get rid of the Wang (and
maintenace charges) asap.
If you convert on demand, then you need to keep the Wang up and running
over a number of weeks / years.
If you do keep the Wang going, then there is an InterOffice gateway
available that allows WANG Office to mail to ALL-IN-1. This does the
conversion on the fly, and so could also be used to convert documents
as needed.....
Cheers, Chris

1471.6 | Shaffstall can do the job | UTRTSC::SMEETS | Martin Smeets DS SSO Utrecht (NL) | Thu Sep 24 1992 16:12 | 42 |
| Hi Glyn,
I don't know if the information provided by Chris in the previous reply answered
all your questions, if so forget the reset.
Before I jointed Digital I was an employee of a chemical Research lab. The
patents buro at the lab had a dedicated Oc wordprocessor with 8" diskettes.
During the introduction of ALL-IN-1 at the lab, there were almost 1,000 Oc
diskettes which had to be converted and transfered to ALL-IN-1/WPS-PLUS.
Because some diskettes were almost 10 years old and the Oc equipment wasn't
supported anymore we decided to convert all diskettes on batch.
Because most of the diskettes contained confidential information the conversion
had to be done at the lab.
The conversion from Oc format to DECdx format was done by the Shaffstall 6000
equipment.

After the conversion each DECDX document had to be transffered to VMS. This was
done by Reflection a terminal emulator. Last but not least each DECdx document
was placed in the ALL-IN-1 filecabinet.
The jobs mentioned above were all done by Reflection and ALL-IN-1 scripts.
You can also consider using Pathworks for transfering the documents from PC to
ALL-IN-1.
I've looked the Shaffstall documentation, it's possible to convert WANG to DECDX

Martin
