1452.0. "Nickname Mail Address field longer than 50 chars" by HGOVC::ANTHONYWONG () Fri Sep 18 1992 05:56

    Hi,

Is it possible to extend the length of the Nickname Mail Address field
from 50 to 80 characters since some emailing address to the Internet or
other networks outside Easynet is normally longer than 50 chars? Is
there a simple way to acheive this?

    regards,

    Anthony

The Nickname field IS longer than 50 characters. It is something like
240 characters.... At least it is in ALL-IN-1 V3.0 (the current
    version).

If (like me!!) you are still running on old software, then it is quite
possible to copy the NIENTR form to your user form library, and modify
the form to have a longer field. (I made the form into 132 mode, and
entered the NICKNAME field as 132 chars).

Problems: When you change it you have to either delete and re-create
the NICKNAMES.DAT file, or you need to OA$CNV_CONVERT the file to the
    new format.
This is easy on one account - but needs a lot more planning on all
    accounts in the system.
Also when you upgrade to V3, you will need to change V3's upgrade
procedure that upgrades the NICKNAMES.DAT file to the new format...

An alternative is to use DL - Distribution Lists. These seem to be
able to hold mail addresses a lot longer than NI - Nicknames can do in
    V2.4.

    Cheers, Chris
