1311.0. "Transfering a large number of users and better planning at installation" by GIDDAY::SETHI (Man from Downunder) Wed Aug 26 1992 03:15

    G'day All,

I have noticed one common problem that seems to appear a number of
times namely merging two ALL-IN-1 systems. The problem occurs when a
large number of users have to be transfered from say Node A to Node B,
or ALL users from Node A to Node B.

Away of managing this problem is to plan/encourage customer's to make use
of the SDAF's. In a typical environment where a customer has say a
number of sites for example Site A and Site B, it would be a good idea
to create/have different shared area's. Say on Site A we have SHARA
    and on Site B SHARB.

To transfer the users from Site A to Site B the following needs to
    be done

    1. Ask all the users to read their new mail

    2. Backup the user disk to the new system

    3. Create new mail area at Site B called OA$SHARA

    4. Create accounts at Site B using the information from PROFILE.DAT
from Site A, making sure that Mail area in the PROFILE is set to
       OA$SHARA

    5. Then copy over OA$DAF_A.DAT to Site B, this is the only file you
will need to copy over, unless someone knows different :-)

ALL-IN-1 documentation I feel should provide this information to help
customers plan their multi-site installation. If this could be
implimented as part of the installation procedure it would make
customers think and hopefully plan things.

Another thing that might be helpful during installation is to give the
customer a chance to open more than 1 shared area.

Please feel free to comment on my idea and improve on them, I look
    forward to your replies.

    Thanks

    Sunil

1311.13.0 needs moreUTRTSC::SCHOLLAERTVivaceObjectTeamWorkLinks for IOSWed Aug 26 1992 08:0311
    Sunil,

This is an issue, but in a 3.0 environment there is more to
it because the FCS needs to know where the new users are.
This is also the case when you manually move user from disk
    to disk.

1311.2And copy the shared directories...AIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCWed Aug 26 1992 16:3724
As well as copying the SDAF you need to copy the shared directories (which
typically will be on a different disk(s) than the user directories).

This sinario is nice and simple, but only works if the customer plans for
merging ALL-IN-1 systems at installation time and takes appropriate action
to avoid using the default SDAF (E). It also assumes that the customer never
has more than 5 sites (only 5 SDAFs available).

As .1 points out the issue becomes more complex for V3.0 as the partition file
needs updating for the new users' drawers.

On a well maintained system merging ALL-IN-1 systems is not too complex, the
main problem areas are merging time management and performance if after the
merge two medium sized shared directories make one large shared directory.

What would be nice (and probably not too difficult to write) is a utility to
distribute a percentage of the documents in a shared directory that has
got too large among other shared directories. Thsi would be useful following
a merge and in cases where (for whatever reason) a customer has let shared
directories grow too large.

A nice little project for someone ...

1311.3Same mail area?PASM09::STEVENTAMSteven Tam @PASThu Aug 27 1992 03:128
Hello,

I'm very interested in this topic because I'm now planning the transfer of users from
3 systems. These 3 systems are all using E mail area.

Is there any faster method besides creating different mail areas and account transfer?

Steven.

Steven,

Have a look at note 824. The merge Ajar Behari talks about has been
done for the IS clusters in Holland.

I don't know whether the merge was sussessful. I have no ALL-IN-1
account on the system until because I have had no proper WPS-PLUS training.

I am sure Ajar got the details...

    G'day,

The main reason for entering this topic was to help me plan the
installation of ALL-IN-1 where a customer has more than one
    site/machine.

I feel that better planing and more information about the various pit
    falls would be very helpful.

    Thanks for your replies
