1288.0. "DNS images not installed after reboot ??" by BRSDVP::WILLEMSH () Fri Aug 21 1992 11:31

Hello,

Recently we installed ALL-IN-1 V3.0 at customer's site. He is running VMS V5.4-1
and has a VAX4300 dual host and 2 MVAX 3100 in LAVC.

The problem occurs when he reboots his system. ALL-IN-1 startup fails because
the images DNS$SHARE and DSN$RTL are not installed. (..Images must be installed..)

So, the customer needs to install these images first "MANUALLY" before
restarting ALL-IN-1.

I suggested the customer already to put the installation of these images in
his SYSTARTUP_V5.COM , but, I think the customer has a point here, why does
ALL-IN-1 not check if these images are installed, and if ALL-IN-1 needs them,
why doesn't ALL-IN-1 install them himself ?

I understood that the DNS images are used for DECNET extensions and DECNET
Phase V, but what if the customer does not need DNS ? Or am I wrong and should
the system install these images at boot time ?

Thanks and regards

    Please check earlier notes in this conference, where this has been
    discussed numerous times before.

1288.2DNS and VMS V5.4-1BRSDVP::WILLEMSHFri Aug 21 1992 14:5817
Hai again,

I did check all the notes about DNS in the conferences ALLIN1, V23 and V24.

My real question is,

We have a system V5.5-1 with ALL-IN-1 V3.0 and DNS is not installed manually,
not in SYSTARTUP_V5 and not in SYSMAN. After rebooting the system, the DNS
images are installed anyway and ALL-IN-1 starts up just fine.

This customer runs VMS V5.4-1. Maybe this is the reason why DNS images are not
installed and that ALL-IN-1 V3.0 does not start correctly after the reboot.

Appreciate any help

    Hello Hilde,

    Running STARTNET.COM prior to A1V30START.COM can make the
    difference.

    Have a look at these lines from STARTNET....

$ IF .NOT. F$FILE_ATTRIBUTES("SYS$LIBRARY:DNS$SHARE.EXE","KNOWN") THEN -
$        INSTALL ADD SYS$LIBRARY:DNS$SHARE.EXE/SHARE/PROTECT/OPEN

    Re .0, .1

    I was thinking of the field test conference, where it was discussed,
    although I can't believe it hasn't been discussed here too. But then, I
    am getting old....

    The Installation Guide specifies that the two DNS images are needed.

    It would not be correct for ALL-IN-1 to install the images of another
    product, and hence they are not in our startup.

    There are installed in SYS$STARTUP:OAFC$STARTUP.COM, which
    is invoke almost at the end of A1V30START. A little bit to
    late.

1288.6start the DNS clerk at startup time??CHRLIE::HUSTONFri Aug 21 1992 17:2411

    An easy fix for this is to run the DNS clerk startup as part of the
    systartup_v5.com.

    The FCS links against them and needs them installed. If you run the
    dns$clerk_startup in sys$startup the images will be installed. Note
    that this does some other things as well. If this is not suitable for
    you then either run oafc$startup by hand or install the images by hand.

That's why I vote for just running STARTNET.COM. It installs
DNS$SHARE and thats enough for A1V3START.COM...
