1261.0. "Transfer 500 users !" by KAOFS::R_OBAS () Tue Aug 18 1992 16:42

Hello,
    I have a customer who installed ALL-IN-1 V3.0, brand new system,
fresh installation of everything.
They're at V2.3 at the old system and now we are faced with the problem
of transferring over 500 users to the new system.
   I checked the archived conference for some tips on how to accomplish
this but I did not see anything close.

     1) no Message Router on the old system (new system will use MR and DDS)
     2) 1 mail area, scattered over three disks.
To tansfer one user at a time maybe a little too much time.
     Could someone please suggest as to what approach is best to transfer these
500 users .

  Thanks
  ricardo

    Ricardo,

    Forgive me if I misunderstand your problem. There are some replies on
    large n user transfers in this conference - see notes #445, parts of
    #726 and, in particular, #795.3.

    Is it possible to upgrade the V2.3 system to V3.0, and then do a V3.0
    --> V3.0 multiple transfer? It will still take considerable time
    though.

    Cheers,

1261.2Or perhaps....IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeTue Aug 18 1992 18:5211
    Or upgrade the old system to V3.0, then copy all the files in OA$DATA
    (except A1CONFIG and perhaps others...) across to the new system, copy
    over DAFs and Mail shared areas, fix up the disc names in the profile
    and the shared area master files, rerun partition seeding (??)...

    Or maybe (without an upgrade) do the copies as above, but then do some
    data file conversion to get them into the V3.0 format.

    Don't call me if it breaks :-)

1261.3Upgrade and merge is probably the safest betAIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCWed Aug 19 1992 22:2812
As .2 suggested the safest bet is to upgrade the V2.3 to V3.0 and then merge
the two systems. It may well be possible to directly merge the V2.3 and V3.0
systems with careful planning, but I would not want to speculate on how much
work is involved without doing some detailed planning.

If your customer is in the US the Atlanta CSC can do the merge for a suitable
fee. If you want to find out more about this service contact Wendy Ellis (@ALF)
who co-ordinates all this activity.

These days we will do almost anything for the right price ;^}

1261.6Get rid of 2.3...UTRTSC::SCHOLLAERTVivaceObjectTeamWorkLinks for IOSThu Aug 20 1992 07:4911
    re. 0.

    When it's not possible to move all users at once, I would suggest
    upgrading the 2.3 system to 3.0. Create a different
    mail area on the new system, an SDAF merge (if necessary)
    will be easier.

    Regards,
