1246.5 | Sad, but true... | IOSG::PYE | Graham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's Apprentice | Mon Aug 17 1992 10:05 | 17 |
| Someone who works there has confirmed the rumour, so I have unhidden the
base note and deleted the early replies.
Re .0
ALL-IN-1 IOS has been developed in Reading, England for several years
now. Although Charlotte's trouble will affect the valuable add-ons
developed there, I currently believe that the corporation is smart
enough not to kill off one of its only successful and profitable
layered products. Although Reading has been (and is) under threats of
cutbacks for two or three months now, the indications are that our work
on IOS will continue.
Condolences to the Charlotteans.

1246.10 | Stick a fork in us | SHALOT::HUNT | Last one out, hit the lights | Sat Aug 22 1992 17:45 | 17 |
| It is now official. The Cross-Industries EIC management has decided that
they do not wish to be in office and desktop systems integration business.
Nor do they wish to be in the engineering services business. And, wonder
of all wonders, they don't wish to be in any other business represented by
anyone else occupying any kind of space in this facility.
OPA is gone. We have two weeks at most. No one has said or done anything
regarding the status of our current projects or other customer
commitments. They want us out regardless of impact on us or Digital.
The birthplace of ALL-IN-1 is about to fade off the map.
Professional decorum prevents me from making any other comments. Suffice
to say that I'll have just a few less Christmas cards to worry about from
now on.

1246.11 | going . . . going . . . | SHALOT::LAMPSON | Smokestack Lightning | Sat Aug 22 1992 23:07 | 46 |
| I would like to add some comments at the news Robert has shared
with y'all.
First, it looks like the central portion of the group which gave
birth to ALL-IN-1 is about to fade away forever. This is
certainly a sad occasion. We have been told that Ron Stokes'
presentation to the Disparate Review committee went very well and
his overall business plan was accepted with just minor action
items. In his business plan, the CIS EIC would be getting out of
the Office & Desktop Integration business, the Engineering
Services business and the Business Operations staff that resides
in the OPA facility.
I am not going to consider it official until I am directly
notified, but the odds of any change of heart are virtually nil.
The OPA facility and the SHALOT cluster won't be shut down ...
yet. Over the last two years, the group which was the O/P ACES
was fragmented into many sub-groups. The Sales & Marketing team
started working in a "practice" based out of Chicago. Then the
Office ASSETS team was disbanded an a couple of people joined the
Digital Solutions Library. And, we've had a number of people who
have made personal career changes, but who managed to still work
in the OPA facility. These people will still have a job for now.
I should also point out that the 3 "functions" in the OPA facility
which are being disbanded were all part of the same team when we
were the O/P ACES. When we became part of the CIS EIC, we lost a
lot of our sense of teamwork and our group identity. We also lost
some valuable leaders. The loss of our own identity with our own
leadership led to where we are today.
These layoffs come as no surprise to me. It makes perfect sense
when doing a business analysis of this EIC and the total EIC
organizational structure. Ultimately, this is a local
optimization of the EIC at the expense of the broader corporate
needs and goals.
I'm sure that many of us will be writing farewell notes in this
conference once it is completely official. Many of us have no
plans to move from the Charlotte area. I hope that I will be able
to stay in touch with the many friends I have made working for
Digital and the O/P ACES. The O/P ACES is the only group I have
ever known which was greater than the sum of its people.

1246.24 | goodbye! | SHALOT::LAMPSON | and we're outta here! | Mon Sep 14 1992 19:00 | 11 |
| Well, this is it! Goodbye y'all! I had planned for weeks to
write a "weepy goodbye note", but the tears are gone. Life
moves on...
I am planning to go out on my own with some friends. I cannot
say more than that in this conference. For anyone who wishes
to keep in touch, I am available via the Internet on DECUServe.
See ya around,

1246.26 | OA$EXIT | SHALOT::HUNT | No, Daddy, I glued them on the fish! | Mon Sep 14 1992 20:30 | 14 |
| Good bye everyone. With the exception of these last few weeks, I've loved
every minute of the nine years I've been with Digital. I wouldn't change
a thing ...
ALL-IN-1 was a wild and wonderful ride. I rode it to some heights I
couldn't even see when I first strapped in.
- Carry on the old traditions but don't forget to invent new ones every day.
- Keep the faith but don't forget to renew it as often as you can.
- Cherish your memories but don't forget to dream constantly.
I worry about Digital. I hope it makes it back.

I feel extremely sad to see all those people leaving, having worked
so closely with them for three years , I consider them to be friends.
I feel like a rat that has left a sinking ship without really knowing
it was sinking. I hope somehow we will meet and keep in contact.
Good luck,
Ben

career were in Charlotte and I will miss the friends I made there.
I wish you all well in your new ventures...

| I suppose I'll add my "good-bye" to all the rest. Enough's been said;
there's really nothing I can add (!). I guess this is what it took to get a
short note out of me. 8^)
I've appreciated my interaction with all of you, and share the sentiments
of the others in wishing the rest of you all the best. Sorry if this is a bit
"dry"; there's not a whole lot of emotion left in me. (It only adds to the
irony when my manager presented me with my 20-year plaque only a few hours
after the "termination notification" meeting...)
Have fun, and keep the faith,
F

I'm still dead impressed with the ALL-IN-1 Programming level II

Thanks for the help and good luck and all the best, to you and all
those others that are leaving.

Hey, Arjen; at least I've got a *little* bit of good news for you.
Guess what my last project was, before being terminated? Updating the AP II
course for V3.0. With the assistance of Catrin Hughes in IOSG::, the V3.0
AP II course has just been turned over to Ed.Services for release engineering!
Hope you like it; it's my "swan song"...

| Frank is incredibly effective in bringing across technically based
issues to a mixed/average/normal audience = OA customers. He can make
people understand things.
The quality of his PHASE II presentation in MUNICH early 91 - 2 days
for european customers - has skyhigh ( I had to attend this event twice
therefore ).
First experience of his rare quality was a pilot training of MESSAGE
ROUTER stuff related to A1 V2.1 taking place at some hot rented place
in EUROPARK Munich. ( I was just entering A1 space ... ).
He gave the audience ( mixed levels, european DECcies, Ben Geerdes in
the backrow, later to explain some job offers for AFSG Valbonne ) using
the first two hours a VERY IMPROVISED very LIVE and therefore very
EFFECTIVE technical summary of ALL-IN-1s ... let's say 'structure' ...
and it made me understand things ...
*** IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE ... I will never forget ***
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
DEC - terminating such incredible talent - turns definitely into a
"WRONG" environment for 'dedicated' people and 'fun' work.
Let's say - Don Vickers - should have started "ALL-IN-1 Corp." a long
long time ago.

Well, folks, it's time for me to turn off the lights in my cube and
walk away into the sunset. It's been a great five years and I'll
never forget the you folks. I had the opportunity to work with a
most remarkable group of people here in Charlotte and had the
chance to learn and share with many of you through this notesfile.
I wish each of you the best in your future endeavo(u)rs.

| Hello to all,
Well it's over. This is my final act as a DEC employee. As many of
you know, our office in Charlotte is closing. Out last day is today,
September 18th. They told us "We have chosen not to be in the Office
and Desktop Integration business".
Unlike the EIC, I am remaining in the Office and Desktop Integration
business. Along with a few other excellent office people, I am joining
a consulting practice providing user-centric office products and
services. Of course, I will continue providing real computer (PC)
solutions. If you or your customer needs consultants that put the user
first, calls us at:
Excellent Office Systems, Inc.

I'll be reachable on the (extended) net at:
DECWRL::"[email protected]"
and at home:

| It is with some sadness that I post this note. I have decided to leave
Digital's employment, and go to work for Pheonix Technology Associates,
Incorporated. My last day will be this friday (5-feb) The last ten years with
Digital have been very rewarding for me, and the years spent working with the
ALL-IN-1 product are some of the most memorable. I have really enjoyed
the opportunities I had to meet many of you. I certainly hope that I have
been able to provide some assistance to those of you who face customers
each day and that you will remember me when I am that customer :^).
Please do not post replies to this just to say goodbye. You can send
me mail through friday, or call me: DTN 367-5455. After friday I can
be reached at home for the next month:
