1245.0. "Primary Language - and changing it ???" by EEMELI::SALMINEN (Hannu Salminen, PTG -Finland) Fri Aug 14 1992 12:45

	H E L P !!!

Could some guru tell me (or give some pointer) what is the actual
meaning in ALL-IN-1 v2.4 Primary Language.

I have a potential consultation project where customer wants to
change their ALL-IN-1 v2.4 FINNISH to ALL-IN-1 v2.4 US ENGLISH.

I have tried to find information on this kind of change from
TIMA/STARS and from several Notes conferences with no success
(possibly the main language is seldom changed).

If I install the ENGLISH kit as a secondary language, what are
the operations I have to carry out to make it the primary
	(and finally the only) language?

Or should I have to install ENGLISH as a first full installation
and then copy the old DAT-files on the blank ones?

    Hannu,

    I'll start off.

To me a 'Primary language' is an ALL-IN-1 language which:

    - has its logicals defined in the System table
    - is referred to by OA$DEFAULT_LANGUAGE

Obviously all SHARE things are included.

In A1CONFIG there is a field called 'Default language'. For every
ALL-IN-1 language installed a record is added to A1CONFIG. For one of
these records the field value is 'Y'. By changing this value, and
restarting ALL-IN-1 you can switch the Primary (Default) language.
    This is the theory...

There aren't that many data files in the language dependent Data
directory. However, just copying them from Finnish to English migth
cause some problems. E.g. Don't copy DAY_OF_WEEK.DAT. Probably
    DATE_FORMAT.DAT and TMMENUENTRY.DAT neither.

If it possible to install the English version next to the Finnish
version. Keep it as second language (that is, does Finnish support
English), because English (as a primary language) doesn't support
Finnish (check OA$BUILD:OAMARKET.BLI). With these two versions running,
you can for example check and merge the contents of the language
dependent data files. You need to relink at least one time after the
    installation to create a OA$LLV_FINNISH.EXE (I think).

Also, if customizations have been made, you need to check if these need
to be made again for ENGLISH elements. You can use the Finnish elements
as reference, as new templates, you can run differences on the Finnish
elements, etc. Once this is done, make sure your FINNISH elements are
    deleted (before you disable ALL-IN-1/Finnish).

Get Finnish information out of: CM$FORM$LIBS, CM$LANGUAGES and CM$SDC
    also.

I'm not too sure about licenses needed to run English temporarily as
    a Second language.

When all has been modified, delete the FINNISH record from A1CONFIG,
modify the ENGLISH record and set the 'Default language to 'Y', reboot
the system to get rid of the Finnish logicals and English should be
available. Delete the Finnish directories afterwards.

I'm sure there are some gaps in this reply (like what's going to happen
with File Cabinet Mail folders), but I'm sure someone else will have
    more info.

    Hello Hannu,

don't forget the users. If the users on that system have Finnish as a
default language, they also have some mails and documents in system
folders (ROSKAKORI - should be deleted by a "empty wastebasket" run -,
    SAAPUNEET, LUETUT, LUODUT, LHETETYT).

Copy the mails from the Finnish folders to temporary folders. Then
change the default language of the users to English and let them enter
ALL-IN-1 again. When they recopied the temporary documents back to the
English folders, they can be accessed again by the user.

    Another issue:
If the initial system was a Finnish ALL-IN-1, the country component is
probably Finnish, too - as Simon says, US does not support other
languages. If so, after a language switch you will have an English
language system with a Finnish country component. I assume this is what
you want, but I want to make you aware of this.

    	Stefan
