1227.0. "Migration Costs and Strategies" by FPTVX1::ORASIN () Wed Aug 12 1992 19:12

I am looking for migration costs, strategies etc that I could position
with my customer who is currently running All-In-1 V2.4 and looking to
migrate to V3.0 and Teamlinks over time. Have any of you "run" the
numbers on this to look at things like cost per seat, etc.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike,

    First things to remember are:

TeamLinks runs just fine aginst ALL-IN-1 v2.4, you need the TeamLInks
    Connection PAckage obviously ALL-IN-1 v3.0
has much more functionality but it depends on what your customer needs
are. Unfortunately the message that appears to have got out is that you
need to upgrade to v3.0 to use TeamLinks.

If you upgrade to ALL-IN-1 v3.0 and you wish to use TeamRoute
functionality from ALL-IN-1 you can't at the moment because TeamRoute
    for ALL-IN-1 v3.0 isn't available.

P.S Please try and spell ALL-IN-1 correctly - all in uppercase

    Regards,

Thanks for the information Andrew. I am aware that we do not need to
move to version 3.0 to get teamlinks connections. The customer is
trying to identify how to support the movement from centralized office
time shared environment ie ALL-IN-1 to lan-based distributed
environments being pushed by Microsoft, Lotus and everybody else on the
planet. Even if we are the installed office application now we need to

a)Present a planned migration strategy to customers.
b)Identify the issues which need to be addressed
    		-machine downsizing
    		-distributed operations support
    		-training
    		-and lots of other things
c)We must be able to present this strategy not only as a "major
player" with a vision but also need to support the customers need to
"justify" cost and expense associated with the migration.

This brings me back to the original request for feedback from others
who are currently planning the migration and are willing to share their
    experiences.

    Regards,
    Mike

If you want a document that describes everything, you will probably
need to write it yourself.... (but I would LOVE a copy of it!).

The main push towards Client / Server computing, DownSizing of machines
and a Graphical User Interface comes from the users and customers -
although people like Lotus and Microsoft are helping things along very
    nicely.

GUI: Easy to use, learn and adapt to: applications that are intuitive
and obvious ("I don't want that bit of text there, I want it there. Oh,
    it is there, that's clever!!").

Client / Server: Separation of form from function taken a stage
further. Separation of the application from the Services. Services are
things like Mail delviery, mail addressing, file cabinet storage,
printing, sorting, filtering, managing etc etc are all network
    tasks....
Applications like customer billing, word processing, expense form
filling etc are all personal tasks to take place on the local users
    desktop.

DownSizing: With PC's now getting cheaper all the time (Microsoft
reckon a PC MIP is about a 600th to 1000th the cost of a mainframe MIP
    - and the ratio is unchanged for the last 10 years), it makes sense to
make more use of the PC desktop.
TeamLinks and other products just allow this movement to progress in a
more or less evolutionary manner, rather than a revolutionary Office
Vision, throw it all away and start again....
