1225.0. "HP-LASERJET headache when printing from ALL-IN-1" by BACHUS::AUSSIE (Thank God for Fridays) Wed Aug 12 1992 17:33

Hi all,

I have a customer with 10 HP-Laserjet III printers newly
setup which we supplied the ALL-IN-1 printer tables for.
The customer is running All-in-1 V2.4 and WPS 4.0.

Some details to keep in mind. The printer is not POSTscript
nor is it using CPS. The customer asures me that some
some documents print and some do not and there appears
to be no major differences within the files ie. control
	blocks or pictures.

All documents print on Digital printers.

Tests tried on documents that don't print.

	Setting privileges makes no difference.

There is no error message received it just exits all-in-1.

Printing to a file works and printing the created file to
	HP-Laserjet works as well.

When exporting a document to VMS and importing the document
again and print the error received is "Error occurred during
operation: NULL POINTER" same error when creating a new document
	and doing GOLD GETDOC.

Has anyone got any ideas how to solve this problem. Unfortunately
can't log into customer site to test myself.

What are the differences when processing a document to a file
	instead of a printer.

	Thanks in advance.

1225.1Some questionsIOSG::NEWLANDRichard Newland, IOSG, REO1-D/4AWed Aug 12 1992 17:5720
1. When you refer to ALL-IN-1 Printer tables do you really mean WPS-PLUS
Printer Tables, that is, .PRA and .PRC files which are created for and
used only by the WPS-PLUS formatter?

2. If the answer to 1 is Yes, am I correct to assume that you are printing
WPS-PLUS documents? Do problems occur with other types of documents
    such as ASCII?

3. Do you know at what point ALL-IN-1 exits? During a print operation a
number of informational messages are displayed on the terminal. What
    is the last message displayed?

4. One possible difference between printing to a queued printer and
printing to FILE is that the former can use background formatting but
the latter will always use foreground formatting. Also, what Format
Styles is used when you print to a FILE?

1225.2Some answers.....BACHUS::AUSSIEThank God for FridaysThu Aug 13 1992 17:1220
Hello,

Some answer to the questions in .1.

Yes I am refering to the .PRA and .PRC files. (My mistake)

The customer is having the problems only with WPS documents.
He has tried ascii and 20/20 files whick print ok.

ALL-IN-1 exits, the last message displayed is formatting
the document. The customer now informs me that he gets an
access violation and a stack dump before ALL-IN-1 fails.
He is faxing me in the dump which I will include as soon
	as I get it.

	The format style is HPLJIII.

	Thanks in advance

1225.4Probably WPS-PLUS FormatterIOSG::NEWLANDRichard Newland, IOSG, REO1-D/4ATue Aug 18 1992 22:3715
From the information you have supplied it looks like the ACCVIO is
occurring in the WPS-PLUS Formatter. It is the WPS-PLUS Formatter which
displays the message 'Formatting document . . . ' and it doesn't appear to
complete the format operation. This could be confirmed by selecting the
WPS-PLUS document and doing:

	<format OA$CURDOC_FILENAME, 'TEMP.LIS', 'HPLJIII'

If this ACCVIOs you will have to report the problem in the WPS-PLUS
conference (MAGIC::WPS-PLUS). Also, ask the customer if the HPLJIII
Printer Table has been modified.
