1092.1 | In Europe now, In the U.S ?? | AIMTEC::WICKS_A | DEC Mail Works for ME sometimes | Tue Jul 21 1992 21:18 | 12 |
| bj,
The availability of MJU (mail Janitor) for v3.0 in Europe at least
was announced by Tony Redmond in note 1026.2.
The U.S is a problem due to the lack of ASSETS program but I believe
Tony posted the name of a person to contact to try and get one
initiated.

1092.3 | Answers to the MJU questions | VITARA::REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Wed Jul 22 1992 13:25 | 12 |
| To answer the questions:
1. Yes, MJU runs under ALL-IN-1 V3.0 and will be available through
European ASSETS shortly. U.S. people should contact their own
ASSETS organization and urge them to get MJU into the U.S. library.
2. No, MJU does not handle documents. It processes messages in the
OUTBOX and READ folders. However, some simple customization would
allow other folders to be processed as well. This might take some
time to complete on a large system, however.

| There was an ASCOT for 2.4 called Expire Document Tool. I think
they are working on an update for V3.0.

RESOURCE SCHEDULER have been put on hold pending retirement in the
U.S ASSETS library.

| If someone needs a copy of Mail Janitor for a U.S. customer they can
contact me and I'll see if I can sort something out. I hate when
bureaucracy gets in the way of helping customers.

bj,
SES has been broken into four separate, independent components and
upgraded to V3.0. The components are:
Resource Scheduling
Log Management
Office Directory
TM Enhancements
For information on these solutions, contact Juda Edwards @OPA.

| Whilst I fully support what Tony is doing and agree that it is the right
thing please note that Support for these packages in the U.S cannot at
this time come from the U.S CSC.
So if you are going to bypass the bureaucracy and get copies and help the
customer please contact the following people and let them know
that they need to get their act together and sell these packages
in the U.S
Resource Scheduler: Juda Edwards @OPA
Mail Janitior: Dave Holt @REO
Please note I am not posting these names without permission as they
appear on the Main Page of what used to be the U.S ASSETS library.

1092.12 | Support of MJU/FCR | SIOG::T_REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Tue Aug 11 1992 11:36 | 16 |
| We are happy to support Mail Janitor kits in the U.S. if:
a) We provide the kit (i.e. it's not a bootleg network copy
b) We negotiate a support charge
c) Everyone is happy
The same goes for the File Cabinet Report. I cannot, for the life of
me, understand why the U.S. has its collective head up its rear orifice
regarding these tools. If customers want them then we should provide
the tools.
Bureaucracy sucks.

1092.16 | Support | MAULS::REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Thu Aug 13 1992 10:22 | 20 |
| I think what ADW is trying to indicate in .15 is that there is no support for
these products in the U.S. At least, this is the current position as I
understand it. You have two practical options:
1. You support the products yourself. Not too hard to do if you know
ALL-IN-1 scripts etc (for MJU), but FCR is a different kettle of fish as it's
written in BASIC and we don't release the source code (it would get very
difficult to maintain if 50 different versions of the source was floating
around).
2. We support it for you. This doesn't cost too much. Contact me for further
details. We will ask for some money though.
Naturally we don't want to get into the situation where we're doing work that
a U.S. group should. We have made efforts to get U.S. groups interested,
including ASSETS, but to no avail.
Maybe the CSC would like to accept support responsibility?

1092.17 | I care; I asked. | GANTRY::HULL | Digital Services Delivery - Motown | Thu Aug 13 1992 14:21 | 21 |
| If you heard the DVN with Don Zereski on Tuesday, or you listen to it on
video (if they included the entire phone-in Q&A period afterwards), I was the
"Detroit" caller who asked "After the U.S. ASSETS s/w library program was
decimated about a year and a half ago...we now have no support in the U.S.
for packages that our customer want and need. What is the future of the US
program, and how do we support our customers?".
Don Z.'s answer was one of total surprise - he claimed not to have heard of
this action and then someone else there responded that they are actually
adding lots more s/w to the libraries. Thet asked me to send mail on this.
I did so that very night. A long letter.
I haven't received a read receipt back yet (will I even get one?), and no
reply so far.
If they truly hadn't known this (how could they NOT?) then hopefully it will
bring attention to a sadly lacking program here.
Regards,
Al

1092.18 | It's not all ASSETS fault... | SHALOT::WARFORD | Richard Warford @OPA DTN 393-7495 | Thu Aug 13 1992 15:18 | 14 |
| ASSETS as an entire program isn't doing too badly. The Networking group
is continuing to add stuff. Its almost exclusively the office area that
has effectively shutdown. And its not really the ASSETS groups fault.
They don't produce packages, and don't have a large staff for support.
So they have relied on outside groups to develop and provide backup
support for the packages. The soon to be former OPA portion of the
cross industries EIC provide many of the packages and backup support.
Unfortunately, the metrics for this organization has changed many times
and they began to only be measured on thier own revenue return. ASSETS
packages didn't produce revenue for this group - so they were told to
stop doing ASSETS stuff. The US ASSETS team didn't find an alternative
support channel so retired the packages.

1092.19 | Hopefully i've phrased this attempt carefully | AIMTEC::WICKS_A | DEC Mail Works for ME sometimes | Thu Aug 13 1992 18:15 | 21 |
| Tony and I are in agreement I think, something which normally causes a solar
eclipse or something (:==:).
One of the many things I learnt from Don was to always try and do the
right thing even if you do it the wrong way. This means for example
obtaining a copy of MJU from the European ASSETS library even though I
am in America an action which resulted in me being severely reprimanded
and being warned not to obtain the others.
Over and above support for Tony's products I would also like to ensure
that other ASSETS such as SES are made available and supported in the
U.S by the CSC if noone else.
We will continue offline to try and resolve this for the benefit of
our customers but I would still appreciate people mailing the names
listed in .11 to let them know how important this is.
Regards,
Andrew.D.Wicks

1092.20 | A Long and complex situation | MAULS::REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Fri Aug 14 1992 10:33 | 20 |
| Nice going Al. Let us know how Don Z. responds.
Rick is very correct in noting that the U.S. ASSETS people had problems with
Office packages. But then again, had they not wasted so much time and money
designing the ASSETS Library System (V2.0) they might have been able to pay
for support or for packages to be developed. Thankfully the European
organizations didn't get too involved in the ATS fiasco which wasted so much
money for Digital. Enough probably to keep many people in OPA employed for
some time to come.
There's also a big different between office packages and those submitted to
the networking and/or manufacturing libraries. The latter tend to be much
larger and complex than the Office packages. Some people in ASSETS didn't
understand this. Some still don't. The vision of a customizable product is
still far from some minds I'm afraid.
It's nice that ADW and myself are in synch. on this one. Some things do
happen once in a blue moon.
