| How accurate does this need to be?
A large (probably more than 100) number of internal sites have been
using it for some months, perhaps nearly a year now.
A smaller number of external customers (more than 10 less than 100)
used it for several months during field test.
I believe that a number (probably 100s) of customers have now upgraded
with the SSB kit. Certainly "shows of hands" at US DECUS indicated it
was widely deployed. It's possible that a number may still only be in
evaluation rather than live mode.
Does that help?
I'm not sure how we find out exactly, since we normally don't hear
about the ones that work, and (without wishing to appear big-headed)
most people seem to think that there aren't many problems upgrading to
V3.0 (which I guess is why you want to know all this anyway :-) ) so we
haven't heard much.

1090.4 | Asking the wrong question? | WARLRD::WICKS_A | DEC Mail Works for ME sometimes | Tue Jul 21 1992 18:25 | 27 |
| Graham's answer was the one your customer should be interested about
in that it doesn't really matter whether 100 or 1000 customers have
upgraded successfully it matters whether your customer is in a position
to upgrade successfully - there is a distinction.
The number of customers who have been able to upgrade successfully is
not constrained by the quality of v3.0 (which is a lot better than
v2.3) but by the availability of layered products that run on it. If
your customer has WPCORP, LOTUS 1-2-3 etc then they are not today in
a position to upgrade. If the customer is in the U.S and they have
any ASSETS packages then they are also limited by the non-availability
of any sort of ASSETS program.
I also don't think it is the Atlanta CSCs job to give out information
such as percentage of customers at a specific version. Certainly today
that would give out a misleading message as I explained in the previous
paragraph.
Why not call back in, or reply here and tell us what your customer
has integrated with ALL-IN-1 and we should be able to help them get
to v3.0 as soon as possible and as successfully as possible after
all that's what I;'m told we're paid for.

Andrew.D.Wicks (Atlanta CSC)

1090.5 | Hard to say... | SHALOT::NICODEM | Avoid traffic; leave work at noon | Mon Jul 27 1992 19:05 | 16 |
| I would guess that you are looking for the number of sites which have
performed the upgrade in a "live" environment, and are now using it in some kind
of production mode. And there's the problem. While you may be able to discover
the number of licenses sold, or systems shipped to date, or any number of other
random figures, it's going to be very difficult to determine how many of those
have received their update and it's still on the shelf, how many have received
it and are "testing" it with a small group of users, how many have actually
put their users on it but perhaps without extensive customizations, or how many
have "totally" upgrade their customized V2.4 systems to a tailored working
environment.
Maybe it would be better to determine just what it is that your customer
wishes to know -- i.e., is it a "confidence level", or specific names and
