998.0. "ALL-IN-1 and USENET News" by WAYLND::HOWARD (Our business is computers not money) Tue Jul 07 1992 18:15

I have a customer who would like to set up a "group conference" on
USENET. His internal users are mostly ALL-IN-1 IOS users, but he deals
worldwide with a lot of universities where they have access to Internet
and the facilities there. He would like a way to have a public
conference out there, but have his ALL-IN-1 users access through some
facility of ALL-IN-1. I've been thinking about NEWS-NOTES, which pulls
USENET articles into VAX Notes, and pushes them back out. (This is a
Toolshed product, so I would have to get some approvals before just
giving it to the customer.) This appeals to him because he doesn't
want them spending their time reading porno stories or classified ads.

I wondered if anyone has an ALL-IN-1 interface into this kind of thing.

998.1Is access to Usenet controlled?IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeWed Jul 08 1992 09:4010
As I understand it, Usenet conference entries are distributed by mail
aren't they? If you have a gateway into Usenet, is it controlled so
that your users can't just apply to be members of the porno groups and
just get all the "notes" sent to them anyway?

It sounds like your plan of making a VAXnotes copy of the usenet
conference is the best idea. I think that is quite commonly done within
    DEC.

I think if you have a product like MXRN, you can pick whatever topic
you want to look at. It's sort of like Notes, in that you just go out
and read what you want, rather than having it come by mail. Of course,
you can set it up to extract and mail to a group. That is probably
where these mail messages come from. I extract baseball standings to a
    file, but don't mail them.

I just wondered if anyone had set up an ALL-IN-1 interface. I'll check
with the author of NEWS-NOTES about customer versions.
