TGIF We all have experienced "the example in the book don't work", thanks to Tony we have added a new level. I received a call from a customer (no VMS programming expierence) who put the SDF, symbol_display, on his system using the example in Chapter 10 of ALL-IN-1 A Technical Odyssey. He followed and double checked the steps and examples to the letter. He did not compile the BASIC program, link it, ... etc ... Have a good weekend, Tim

Ask the customer to send a check to.... Seriously, there seems to have been some BASIC continuation markers (&) missed off some of the lines in the book. They were there in the source, but were stripped of during the process of getting the text from DECwrite to LaTeX (via the CDA AFS format and then through a custom converter). Some of the scripts suffered too, with trailing hyphens being stripped (or even added in some cases). The copyediting should have caught these problems, but the whole process was so new that we had many problems and missed some. Sorry! If the customer cares to review the code (use LSE) they should see where the & signs are missing - anything after a comma (,) for instance. The code should work if they put them in. Tony |
