903.0. "File cab only - do you need user profile?" by YUPPY::CARTER (Windows on the world...) Fri Jun 19 1992 17:38

    Hi

I am working on a TeamLinks proposal, where I believe they will need to
use ALL-IN-1 IOS as a file cabinet, in order to get the locking they
    require.

I have a couple of questions about this:

    1. I envisage setting up a small number of "admin" accounts that own
and manage a number of shared drawers. Is it necessary for the users
of the drawers (as opposed to the owners) to have user profiles, or
    will a VMS account do?

    2. As there are 200 (growing to 1500) users it would be too expensive
to license the system for full ALL-IN-1 for every user, when they won't
be using it... is it possible to just by a license for the
    administrtors?

    3. Does anyone have a paragraph about the filing cabinet that I can
    use in the proposal?

    Thanks in advance

Some answers - and it sounds like you (as well as many others!!) need
    to push Product Management (again).....

    1. With TeamLinks you need to enter a valid USERNAME PASSWORD to access
the VAX. This USER needs to have a full ALL-IN-1 account (PROFILE)
before they are allowed to use the drawers.

    2. Licensing can be "arranged" with the account team - but the official
answer is every user who access ALL-IN-1 needs a license.

Marketing / Product Management have been "talking" about a File Cabinet
only version of ALL-IN-1 - but nothing doing yet.
Also... there is no STARTER for V3.0 yet - so you can't use that
approach to get a "cheaper" license.

One problem is how much should go into a File Cabinet ony system??
Script server?, File Cabinet remote access? UI to allow user to
specify sharing options? System Mangement? File Cabinet repair
utilities? Account creation faciliites? Printing options? CDA Converter
library (VERY useful for TeamLinks)? Meassage Router? Notes
    Conferencing? etc etc
903.2You can do it, but I don't recommend itCHRLIE::HUSTONMon Jun 22 1992 15:1835

Since you are coming from TL, the way you will connect to the file
cabinet is via the FCS. To do this you need two things:

    	1) VMS account/password to supply for authentication
    	2) An ALL-IN-1 file cabinet name, which is built from node that you
are connecting to (where the FC lives) and the ALL-IN-1
user name that owns the file cabinet.

The VMS usernaem supplied for authentication and the A1 username
supplied in the filecabinet name do not have to be related in any way.
There is a catch though. If I use your A1 username and my VMS password,
I will be allowed to connect to the file cabinet just fine. I will NOT
be allowed to access any file cabinet data unless my VMS name has
VMS access to the files that make up your file cabinet.

The ALL-IN-1 username is required since we read the A1 profile.dat to
get several pieces of information, including the directory that the
    filecabinet lives in.

so basically, no, the users of the drawer do not have to have A1
accounts, but I believe without an A1 name you would have to set the
access logistics (ACLs) by hand, which I don't recommend you try, it
    gets fairly complicated.
