869.0. "Mail message disappearing - no errors" by WAYOUT::ALLAMS (If you're not confused, you're misinformed.) Mon Jun 15 1992 13:00

Hi,

I have a stange situation, I wonder if anyone has seen anything
	similar.

Two users; User1 and User2, two nodes nodeA and nodeB.

User1 on nodea has a distribution list set up which includes user2,
addressed as user2@a1@nodeb. All other users are local.

user2 had his account on nodeb, but was transferred to nodea, so, when
the message was sent, his account on nodeb had been transferred, and
	forwarded to user2@a1@nodea.

What happened is that a message was sent by user1 to his dist list,
and so to user2@a1@nodeb. This message got to the a1 mailbox
on nodeb. mr got a confirmation from the fetcher, and the message
was deleted from mr. This is the last that was seen of the message.

	The steps should be:

1	create nbs files in oa$mti_data,
2	create pending record,
3	confirm ok to mr,
4	create wpl file in postmaster,
5	check addressees,
6	discover forwardable,
7	create nbs files in oa$mti_data,
8	create sender queue record in pending.

This must have been successful until step 3. beyond this there are
no references to this mail in any log file, there is nothing in pending,
nothing in oa$mti_data, and nothing in the postmasters account.

My cust has also reproduced the circumstances in which the mail was
sent - transferred forwarded account etc, and could not reproduce the
	problem.

		Any one seen anything similar?

Steve,

I'm not sure what log files you'd expect to see entries in - except MRINF,
which should show the fetch and the repost to MR. Didn't it?

The most likely cause of something 'disappearing' is wrongly-directed MR
mailbox /ROUTE and /REPLACE qualifiers - have you checked these on Nodeb?

    Secondly check:

    1) The NETWORK entry (if used)
    b) The PENDING file for user2 on nodeb - check to see if there
are any 'funny' "MAIL USER2" entries. Extra pending entries can be
created which look like MAIL USER2 but infact can be "MAIL USER2xyz"
    in certain circumstances.

OK,

Apparently, oa$dds_prime is set to 2, so network would be last on the
list - there is nothing wrong with the /replace frags etc., and there
	are no funny pending records.

	Any other ideas?

Steve,

You still haven't said if you can verify if the message was forwarded back to
nodea. Can you check the MR logs? The original sender may be able to get the
MRid for you. You should see it fetched in MRINF on nodeb, and then a new
message sent from the A1 mailbox soon after (it will get a new MRID as a new
envelope is created). I'm not convinced we'll get anywhere with this, but this
might help.
