704.0. "Installation estimate: 3.0 vs. 2.4D" by SWAM2::RHODEWALT_BR (Open. Close. Repeat.) Mon May 18 1992 20:16

Excuse me if this has been covered. I didn't see it.

Customer's work statement includes 2.4D patch. Work has not been done
    and 3.0 has arrived.

    1) At a given single-node, single-language, slightly customized system,
how much more work will be involved in 2.4-->3.0 instead of 2.4D patch?

    2) Are there compatibility issues with 3.0 and Lotus 1-2-3 or
    WordPerfect/OA?

I've taken the three-day Technical Update, which only barely covers
installation, and I've worked with ALL-IN-1 since 1.4. I believe the
    VAX is running VMS 5.4.

    Thanks for any help.

    Bruce,

Why would you be choosing between applying a v2.4 patch against
upgrading to v3.0. It's like trying to compare apples and oranges.

A v2.4 patch fixes some bugs and takes maybe an hour to install but
    gives you no new functionality.

V3.0 takes a long time - say an hour to run pre-check, 12 hours to run
the CART and then maybe another 12 hours to do the upgrade but it
fixes hundreds of bugs and introduces tons of new functionality.

That's your choice or the customers of course

    2) Neither WordPerfect nor Lotus have released v3.0 compatible versions
yet as discussed recently in other notes in this conference.

    Got your attention, anyway.

The customer is using SFCP, which is incompatible with the new
WPS-PLUS. They're ready to go ahead with 3.0, and convert their old
shared documents, but the work statement only has my patch time
accounted for. I was looking for a significantly larger number, so that
this customer could not just "squeeze in" the actual upgrade. You have
given me that, sir, and I thank you.

    Bruce,

Um why exactly is SFCP incompatible with WPS-PLUS ? sounds like somebody
    has been fibbing to you.

Just checked on my system running SFCP R1.2A and WPS-PLUS v4.x and
ALL-IN-1 v2.4 and it works just fine.
