702.0. "Wordperfect conversion to ASCII" by NEWVAX::MAAS () Mon May 18 1992 18:18

My customer uses Wordperfect (V5.1) as their default editor in
ALL-IN-1 IOS (V2.4). They send ALL-IN-1 IOS mail messages to
ALL-IN-1 Mail for MS-Windows. They use Wordperfect with
ALL-IN-1 Mail on the PC. They asked me if the following
is possible:

They would like the ALL-IN-1 IOS cover memo to be converted to
ASCII and any attachments to stay in Wordperfect format. Right
now they are using the ALL-IN-1/Wordperfect integration ability
to convert Wordperfect documents to ASCII (using WPC mailbox).
This works okay but it converts the cover memo and all attachments
to ASCII. Is there anyway to just convert the cover memo???
They want this behavior because they don't like having to launch
into Wordperfect from ALL-IN-1 Mail on the PC just to read the
cover memo.

Any ideas on how we could do this would be greatly appreciated.
This is also posted in the ALL-IN-1 and X400MAIL notes conferences.

Thanks very much in advance.

-Brenda

Try looking up the documentation on the OA$MTI_TRNS logical name in the
ALL-IN-1 Manager's Guide. This does something like what you want, but may not
make it in all cases (e.g. forwarding messages).

702.2OA$MTI_TRNS and Wordperfect???GRANPA::BMAASTue May 19 1992 17:3014
    I looked up OA$MTI_TRNS in the Mail Manager's Guide and it sounds
    like what my customer wants to do except it only mentions that
    the logical causes Message Router to convert from WPS-PLUS to ASCII,
    not Wordperfect or any other format.

    In note 276 in this conference, Andrew Wicks suggests that
    OA$MTI_TRNS = 1 will cause anything to be converted to ASCII.
    He asks for confirmation of this but there are no other replies.

    Does anyone know for sure? If not I will have my customer try
    it and I will post the answer here.

    Thanks very much for the help.

    Brenda,

    But what does he know!

    I don't know him too well but I gather he did work in the Mail team
    for a few years so there's a fair chance that he might be right on this
    and that what OA$MTI_TRNS does is to translate all non-ASCII bodyparts
    to ASCII.

    But he might be wrong.

702.4Modify function of OA$MTI_TRNSNEWVAX::MAASThu May 21 1992 18:3031
    Thanks for the help. And Mr. Wicks -- I will never doubt you again!!!

    My customer tried setting OA$MTI_TRNS to "1" and it worked great.
    It did what it is advertised to do. However, would it be possible
    somehow, through an ALL-IN-1 customization, to change its
    functionality a bit:

    1) When sending documents from WP, the cover memo does not get
    translated to ASCII. It states this in the documentation and
    we tried it and that's the way it works. But my customer
    wants ALL cover memos, whether created in EM or WP, to be converted
    to ASCII from Wordperfect. Is there a way to change this behavior?

    2) My customer only wants cover memos translated from Wordperfect to
    ASCII if a message is going to certain destinations, like ALL-IN-1 Mail
    or other mail systems where we know they don't have Wordperfect.
    They don't want the cover memo converted to ASCII if the message
    is going to other ALL-IN-1 IOS systems with Wordperfect on other nodes.
    Would it be possible to write a script that would check the recipients
    of the message and set OA$MTI_TRNS accordingly? What if the message
    was being sent to multiple destinations: to a PC running ALL-IN-1 Mail
    (and you want conversion) and also being sent to another ALL-IN-1 IOS
    system on another node (and you don't want conversion) -- would you be
    able to set it for each destination in a message?

    These may be real basic questions but ALL-IN-1 is not my usual area
    of support and I don't know too much about all that customization
    stuff.

    Continuing thanks for all the help,
    Brenda
702.5That's yer lotFORTY2::ASHGrahame Ash @REOFri May 22 1992 10:5613
Brenda,

I think you've exhausted the minimal capabilities of what a single logical
name can do! I'm afraid OA$MTI_TRNS does exactly what you've seen and you
can't change it - its effect is all in code.

To get a more sophisticated algorithm, you'll have to set it to 0, and let
something else handle the conversions - ALL-IN-1 can't do it. For ALL-IN-1
MAIL, it can do conversions on incoming mail. For other UAs you might like to
consider the MRXLATE utility (soon to be a product - see FORTY2::MRXLATE conf
for full information)

    Although this is the wrong conference for talking about ALL-IN-1 Mail
    but since you mention it here, while ALL-IN-1 Mail does do conversions
    on incoming mail, I don't think it can convert Wordperfect. Or
    have I missed something?????

    Thanks again,
    Brenda
702.7ProbablyIOSG::TALLETTGosh, it just gets a worse mess!Wed May 27 1992 23:029

    	I think it can, if you install the WP convertors.

    	But try the ABBOTT::WINDOWS_OFFICE conference, as the WP convertors
    	are being developed as part of the TeamLinks agreement, and that's
    	where the experts hang out.
