664.0. "PAT problems (again)" by RTOEU3::JGIBBONS () Mon May 11 1992 13:59
My site has been having a number of problems with PATs, and they tested it
using my account. I happened to have my notebook open at the time so it
failed to backup the VMS files. The administrator then ran the PAT again. I
do not think she did a CTN. This resulted in a backup saveset that contained
two versions of ZDOCUMENTS.BCK and two copies of VMS_ACCOUNT.BCK. The saveset
was undone and then rebuilt containing the largest copy of these two files.
The account was then moved onto another system. I looked at several files,
created new files, mail messages etc and it looked ok, so the original account
was deleted and the copy moved back to the original machine.
However, I now find that some of the files are "missing", that is, there is a
DOCDB entry but no physical file.
I still have the original saveset, and when I unpack it I find all the
.ARCHIVE and .ARCHIVE_BODY files.
So, ... in attempt to restore my missing documents, I created
ARCHIVE$AREA_000003 and copied the .ARCHIVE* files for document number 1927
(just one document as a test) to that directory and ran the following script
LOGICAL ARCHIVE$AREA_000003,DEC_USER$DEV2:[JGIBBONS.A1.XFER]
GET #ARCHIVE_ID = "ARCHIVE$AREA_000003:GIBBONSJ1001001927.ARCHIVE"
ARCHIVE_CREATE_POINTER #ARCHIVE_ID
GET #DOCNUM = OA$CURDOC_DOCNUM
RESTORE_DOCUMENT #ARCHIVE_ID,#DOCNUM
.EXIT
This gave the error message
%OA-W-ARCFAIOPIN, Failed to open input Archive file
-OA-I-LASTLINE, ARCHIVE$AREA_000003:GIBBONSJ1001001927.ARCHIVE
But it created a document in the ARCHIVED DOCUMENTS folder with an Archived
pointer field containing ARCHIVE$AREA_000003:GIBBONSJ1001001927,
so I tried doing a RAD, which it said worked, by which only bought back the
document body, none of the attachments. It then deleted all the
ARCHIVE$AREA_000003:GIBBONSJ1001001927.* files.
Is there anything I can do to get back my documents (complete with
attachments)???? PLEASE say there is!!!
BTW I have seen various STARS articles about doing this, but I suspect they
won;t work for me as I don't have the DOCDB after the PAT (i.e. there are no
"archived" entries for the missing documents.

| They were both 2.4, but I have given up on it and resigned myself to losing
a large number of mails. I have since deleted many of the components that
would be necessary to recover.
The final straw was that when I looked at the DOCDB out of the savset not all
of the mails were showing up as archived (even though they had been).
Like I said at that point I started doing documents transfers on the essential
documents (ok, this looses the mail info) and gave up on the other ones.
