| Not sure of the exact name, it is a third party defragmenter. I
will check with customer. I had him dictate exactly what his
question was - I have no idea what a "placed" file is.....

631.3 | Placed files are .... | GIDDAY::SETHI | Man from Downunder | Wed May 06 1992 03:42 | 26 |
| Jean,
Okay I have used RABBIT7 a defragmentor written by Software
Inteligence and found it very good.
Now "PLACED" files from as I can remember are those files that are most
frequently used. How RABBIT7 worked was to place the least used files
at the back of the disk (ie near the spindle) known as "WAREHOUSE"
files. To optimize disk access of the most frequentialy used files
they were placed in the or near the middle of the disk, thus reducing
seek time for these files "PLACED" I guess that's what his defragmentor
is refering to.
ALL-IN-1 does not from what I know optimize file access or defragment
disks. The problem he is having MAY HAVE been caused by the
defragmentor (I am sure it is BUT I don't want the customer to say
Digital said so), he should read his documentation and see what
recovery procedures are provided by the defragmentor or ask the
distributor for help. The above problem does not look good to me.
By the way between the two of us and the door RABBIT7 is one of the
best defragmentors and have quite good support.
Good luck

| Sunil, thanks for your help. I called customer - they are using
DISK KEEPER, and he just "knows" that is not placing his files...

631.5 | "PLACED" is no problem | KAOFS::D_STREET | | Thu May 07 1992 20:44 | 11 |
| Hi,
I used to do customer support for SQUEEZPAK, another defragmentor,
and any file we moved had "PLACEMENT CONTROL" put on it. This was
from VMS since we were not just asking VMS to make the file
contiuous, but to do it in a specific spot on the disk. This is
how the product was able to consolidate the free space as well as
defragement the files. This PLACED aspect of the file is only of
concern when the file is created. In 4 years of supporting the
defragmentor, I never found a case where it caused any problems.

631.6 | DEC's own defragmentor is called DFO | GIDDAY::SETHI | Man from Downunder | Fri May 08 1992 08:02 | 10 |
| G'day,
By the way DEC's disk defragmentor is called DFO I don't know too much
about it. I just thought that I would mention it just in case a
customer is looking for a defragmentor we can puch our own wonderful
product. I can see the $$$$$$ rolling in hopefully !
To install DFO the customer MUST have VMS 5.5 installed.
