627.0. "ALL-IN-1 & VAX NOTES V2.2" by TAV02::SHAPIRA () Tue May 05 1992 15:49

Hi,

A customer uses ALL-IN-1 Group Conferencing under V2.4. He uses
VAX notes V2.1 and wants to upgrade to VAX notes V2.2. Are there any
limitations or problems regarding Group Conferencing work with V2.2 of notes ?

Thanks, Yariv

    Yariv,

    ALL-IN-1 v3.0 ships with VAX NOTES v2.2 so that's ok and we have
    VAX NOTES v2.2 on one of our v2.4 machines without any apparent difficulty
    though I do remember hearing something about the DECWINDOWS or MOTIF
    interface.

    Not a lot of help I know but with it being DECUS this week I guess
    all the experts are away.

    Regards,

627.2Installation guide?ESOA11::ORRTue May 05 1992 19:157
    I just got a call from a customer who is preparing to install 3.0, and
    yes indeed they did get NOTES v2.2, but they didn't get any type of
    installation guide or instructions for it. Did they just not look
    in the right place? I tried to find the NOTES v2.2 installation guide
    on the network, but didn't have much luck there either. Shouldn't they
    have received something about installing notes? What should I tell
    them to do?
627.3Yes, you need Motif for V2.2IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeTue May 05 1992 19:489
    It's a fact (as Andy recalled in .-2) that you have to have MOTIF
    installed before you can install Notes V2.2. Because of this
    requirement, the conference you are currently reading is still hosted
    on V2.1, a fact I find occasionally annoying!

    I thought that at least some of the notes books were in our kit, but
    I'll let someone who understands NPFs answer that.

    I have the NPF but I don't understand it though I did get a v3.0
    doc set which I unwrapped only to find that the Notes documentation
    isn't in it - I got an Update doc kit but I still should have got
    a Notes book as v2.4 of ALL-IN-1 came with an earlier version of notes.

    Hopefully someone will be able to persuade the ultimate authority on
    NPFs and docs Mr Creasy to enter the real answer to this (:==:)

627.5MOTIF IS A MUST ?TAV02::SHAPIRAWed May 06 1992 07:248
Hi,

Thanks for your replies. As I understand, V2.4 works with NOTES V2.1. In
order to upgrade V2.4 to work with V2.2 the customer MUST install MOTIF.

Am I right ?

    MOTIF a must? I run NOTES V2.2 on my ALL-IN-1 V2.4, VMS 5.4-3 without
    DECwindows or MOTIF. It works.

    I know a little about NPFs. I don't suppose anyone would claim to
    be an expert.

    The VAX Notes installation guide is not included in ALL-IN-1 V3.0
    update kits. There was no change in the guide between V2.1 and V2.2.

    Presumably MOTIF is only required if you wish to use the DECwindows
    interface to Notes (good for coffee breaks when reading long notes). I
    suggest the VAXnotes conference for confirmation.

    Martin.

    Yes that's right. VAX Notes 2.2 can only be used if you install
    Motif prior to upgrading. However, this is only applicable to
    DECwindows interface. Character cell terminals will see no
    difference. So if you use a VT220 etc, and want to upgrade - no
    problem. If you use a workstation to read notes, you will need
    to hang on until you install Motif.

    Hope this helps.
