609.0. "IOS FC Integration; TeamLinks & MASS-11" by REDBUD::garrisonna (Nancy Garrison) Thu Apr 30 1992 01:36

This note is cross posted in WINDOWS_OFFICE and ALL-IN-1 conferences.

This question pertains to ALL-IN-1 IOS, with MASS-11 as the default editor,
sharing documents via the IOS File Cabinet with TeamLinks users; they have
MS-Word as their default editor.

From a TeamLinks perspective, I understand that if the user wants a
document format different than the way it is stored, conversion must be
user-initiated.

When the TeamLinks user wants to retrieve a MASS-11 document from the
IOS File Cabinet, the MASS-11 document must have been saved as a RTF
file in order for Word to use it. No user-initiated conversions had to
be done.

If the MASS-11 user does not save as an RTF format, then a server-based
converter must be invoked; the resulting file stored as a Word document in
the ALL-IN-1 IOS File Cabinet.

The questions are when we are going the other way:

1) When the Teamlinks user saves the MS-Word document to the IOS File
Cabinet, how is the document taggged? Is it tagged as foreign or
   as a Word document?

2) In this scenerio, assume there are no server-based converters available.
How will the MASS-11 user bring the document in? According to
Microsystems, MASS-11 can output RTF, ASCII and Word Perfect, along
with others, but how does MASS-11 DSAB handle the document retreival?

3) Assuming there were server based converters, would you have the
MASS-11 user convert the document before bringing into MASS-11
(GOLD/GET for WPS)?

Thanks for the clarification,

Nancy

609.1You've asked the vendor?AIMTEC::WICKS_AThe Mancs will NEVER win the lgeThu Apr 30 1992 17:178
    Nancy,

I assume you've asked Microsystems Engineering Corp since these
questions also since they produce the ALL-IN-1 Integration.

RE: .1

Yes, I have talked to Microsystems, but they told me it depending on
how the MS-WORD document was tagged...foreign? Or does it have it's
own DSAB? Once, I get that part of my question answered, I can
figure the rest of it out.

Thank,

Nancy

    Nancy,

OK I was just checking... and here's what I know.

    1) In REAL ALL-IN-1 you cannot use MS-WORD as your default editor
since MicroSoft never produced an integration to ALL-IN-1. Any
such message that you might get into your FIleCabinet will be
marked as FOREIGN and you won't be able to read it.

    2) From TeamLinks you can have MS-WORD as your default editor but due
to some problems with the current baselevel - to do with FILECAB.DAT
(see ABBOTT:WINDOWS_OFFICE can't remember the note number) it's
difficult to view any document in your IOS FileCab unless it's ASCII
so I can't at this very moment drop an MS_WORD documnt in my FileCab
to see how it's tagged and let you know the answer - but my guess
       would still be FOREIGN.

I realise that this wasn't much help either but I just wanted you to
know I took the trouble to try it.
