581.0. "which version?" by OTOOA::LYONS () Mon Apr 27 1992 22:22

We are planning on re-installing ALL-IN-1 on our system due to some
    hardware problems.

The question is do we re-install 2.3 or do a new install of 2.4 or wait
    and install 3.0!

We presently have 5.4 VMS, but will be upgrading soon. I have read
through the notes file and notice that 2.4 has problems with 5.5 of VMS.
Is 2.4 just a bug fix?

We still have customers requesting training on 2.3,2.4. If we install
3.0 would it still be possible to use it to train 2.4 users. (in other
words - could we "hide" the 3.0 features and make it act like 2.3/2.4)

We do not have the hardware, etx to support two different versions on our
    systems.

    Regards
    Pat

I just realized what I said! I know that 2.4 has things like Job
Services etc. in it. So my question really is wether to go 2.4 or 3.0.

Hmmm. Sounds like an unusual motivation for an upgrade. If you
have a lot of customisations and need to get your system back
running quickly, then maybe you should stick at V2.3 until you
    	can plan the upgrade properly.

Well I am probably biased, naturally, but I'd say why bother with
V2.4, just go directly to V3.0 (and do not pass go).

V2.4 was mainly a bug fix release, with some new functionality as
you noted in your next reply. Just because you haven't heard that
    	V2.3 doesn't have problems with V5.5, don't assume that it doesn't!
From knowledge of the problem, I don't see why V2.3 should work
any better than V2.4 or V3.0...

No, not really. Lots of forms have been changed to add the drawer
field for example. You would have to do a lot of (pointless)
customisation to get rid of these new features.

Ahah! I just realised, you are presumably in Ed Services or
something, whose main purpose is training. Am I close?
I would have thought your training requirements would drive
your version decision in that case.

    Pat,

Sidestepping the VMS v5.5 question which is discussed in about 1000
replies to note 134 other than to say that both v2.4 and v3.0
have the same symptoms here are the questions you should ask yourself.

    1) Is v2.3 worth the effort given it will be retired soon - No
    2) is v2.4 worth the effort given that customers already have the v3.0 boxes
in their loading bays - well maybe given some people will stay at
v2.4 for a year or more but almost all the Ed Servs courses are
already up to v3.0 level already.
    3) Do you need both v2.4 and v3.0 if so what about co-existant systems
       - did I really say that oh dear what have I started now.

    Thanks for your replies.

We will stick with 2.4 for now and have 3.0 installed on another system
shortly. And yes we are in Ed. Services
