562.0. "Documents requested" by UTROP1::STEENIS_M () Thu Apr 23 1992 19:11

    Hi,

I'm currently working on a small investigation to prepare myself
    for a demo.

The customer I work for mostly, has a special department that is
responsible for translating documents between the Dutch language
    and several others including :

    . German
    . Italian
    . Portuguese
    . French
    . Spanish
    . Greek
    . Turkish
    . Servo-Kroatic (...)

I'm thinking of setting up a demo environment consisting of :

    - ALL-IN-1 Dutch with WPS-PLUS V3.1 of WPS-PLUS V4.0
    - Documents in the ALL-IN-1 supported languages (several european)
and if possible Turkish and Greek
    - Spell checking options for at least several euro languages and
      if possible Greek or Turkish

Q : Can somebody from one of the Nationalities who use a language
mentioned above attach WPS-PLUS documents to this note which
        contain :
        - special characters (compose sequences) unique for your
          language
        - language specific control blocks

Q : Can somebody post the locations I can get spelling checkers
and correctors for the euro languages ?

Q : Is spelling checking & correction available within ALL-IN-1
IOS for the Greek & Turkish languages and how can I get
        hold of this code/dictionaries ?

I know I can expect problems with character sets, being or being
not supported using ALL-IN-1 Dutch in combination with other
    character sets and keyboard tables.

Q : That's why I would like to ask which keyboard tables I need
for the system as configured above to support different
        languages using ALL-IN-1 Dutch ?
(Integration from elements from different Market
        Components...)

    Thanks in advance,

    Martin

562.1Some thoughts...IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeMon Apr 27 1992 11:2425
I'm not the best person to answer this, perhaps someone from the FRO
office or one of the old LEGs will also answer.

As far as I know, there aren't any spell checkers for Greek or Turkish.

The Greek, Turkish and Serbo-croat (if there is one, I think there's a
Hungarian if that's the same) versions are not produced by central
engineering, but are specials produced by Frankfurt.

The WPS-PLUS notesfile announced a kit for (v3.0) spell checkers
recently, but since V3.0 isn't available in the other languages yet
that doesn't help much. You might want to post a note in the spell
checking / linguistics conference (see 4.* here for a pointer) to see
    if they can help.

BTW, you can't put WPS-PLUS messages into a notesfile (even from GPC)
they all get converted to ASCII, which (wth DDIF) is all that notes
understands. This might mean that some of the MCS characters would get
    lost.

PS If you still need more information, mail me and I'll forward your
mail to some other people, whose names I don't want to post without
    their permission.

    Martin,

to add a few more informations to what Graham already told you:

    - Greek, Hungarian and Turkish versions of V2.4 exist, but no Croatian
    or Serbian.

    - No dictionaries exist for the so called non-Latin-1 languages,
dictionaries for most other languages will come with V3.

    - Instead of installing a Dutch system only, why don't you at least
install a bi-lingual system? Or set up two systems, if you can, each
of one running different language(s) of ALL-IN-1!

    - Be aware that you need to have IOS Latin-5 in place for Turkish and ISO
    Latin-7 for Greek characters.

    - Control blocks in WPS-PLUS are not translated to the target language,
they remain in the language of the system, the sender used. However,
they are interpreted by WPS-PLUS in all languages supported by the
BIV, i.e. except Greek, Turkish etc.

    - As far as I know Dutch, like English, makes use of the letters A to
Z only. I.e. no Umlauts, accents etc. So, you should be able to read
Dutch texts when using Latin-5 or Latin-7. Of course it is no problem
as long as you stay in the LATIN-1 mode which contains the characters
for all languages supported by the BIV.
