Hi,
A customer has been trying to save and restore applications using the new
functionality offered in V3.0. Unfortunately they have experienced some
problems. The applications seem to restore (see log) but when you try to
access any of the restored elements, you can't `see' them. The problem may be
down to not following the right procedure, but below are the list of steps that
tyhey told me they followed. Can anyone coment on this ? Anyone done it
(succesfully) ? What I would really appreciate is Noddys guide to do this ie.
ssteps 1-10 to follow.
I am currently away from the office so I can't experiment, so if anyone can
help me solve this it would be great.
Version is ALL-IN-1 V3.0 BL122D I think.

We selected restore method of FULL and destination of APPLICATION and are
unsure whether this is in fact correct.

When an application is restored it doesn't just magically come
available. Have the form libraries (if you have them) been opened?
has the search order been set? Have you checked that the acutal
elements have been restored?

FULL = restore the elements onto the system rather than REPORT, which
just performs conflict checking.
APPLICATION = restore the elements into the application directories
rather than the application receive area. I would always restore into
the application. The restore area is pretty well a transient location
that requires lots of extra work to use the elements in it. We plan to
do something about this in a PFR.
Now some questions:
Do the application logicals exist?
Are the elements placed in the right locations? They should be in the
development area for the application, ready to be moved into the live
area when the application maintainer deems this to be OK.
Have the elements been registered correctly in CM$SITELOG?
Have the application details been updated correctly in:
CM$APP (application definition)
CM$MAF (application areas definitions)
CM$AUTH$LOCATIONS (application locations)
CM$AUTH$USERS (authorized users for the application - maybe the user
who wants to get into the application isn't authorized to use it).
Have any TXL source locations been included into the CDS TXL?
Have any necessary form libraries been opened?
Are the application directories in the user's element search order?
Restoring an application onto a system is just like moving all of the
elements from a backup saveset into a directory, except that restore
applies a little bit of intelligence and puts elements where they
should go.

Apart from the excellent suggestions in .1 and .2 the restore report
you posted so as to use up valuable IOSG diskspace indicates a number
of strange things which you might like to check:
1) the base root for the BRITISH area does always appear to be defined
as DUA1:[KITS.RBS] because on page 3 it says DISC2:[RBS]. the
siteroot always appears to be DUA1:[KITS.RBS.SITE] which is good
2) on page 8 the SITE_LIB_BRITISH logical points to a directory that
appears wrong - it should end .SITE.LIB and then it appears things
really get strange and the Form elements are defined in the wrong
place and also the script elements. See pages 8 through 12.
3) pages 15 and 16 indicate the receive area already exists
- I think this ok but i'm not sure.
However having said it looks like the application did restore
successfully.
I'd check where the logicals point - do a $SHO LOG *RBS* there should
be about 10 of them. It's point 2 above that I think is the key here.
My guess is 'pilot-error' in that it looks like the customer got the
answers to the questions RA (restore application) asked when it wants
the locations/translations for the logicals wrong.
Anyway i've transferred applications successfully and apart from the
'difficult-to-read' format of the restore report with all those escape
sequences and things the only problem i've had was when trying to
Restore to the RECEIVE area an application that had a form in it.

Moderators, Can someone file the log in .0 somewhere else and put a directive in the rules section about not including traces and files here? For those of us using windows interfaces to VAX Notes it is a real pain to wait minutes while the entire hundreds of lines are copied across the net. Thanks, Joe | |||||
