543.0. "Field Test - VMS Fax Software" by SNOC02::OFARRELL () Wed Apr 22 1992 09:58
A Digital fax product for the Office portfolio is approaching field test
and we are now looking for sites (both internal and customer) to volunteer
to be part of field test.
The Jarrah software (which, subject to final legal clearance, will be
called DECfax Mail) allows users to send and receive fax messages from
their electronic mail systems. The software supports the Compound Document
Architecture and many of the document types available with CDA (including
PostScript, DDIF and WPS-PLUS) in addition to ASCII. The software will take
compound documents to be faxed and automatically convert the different
document types to fax format.
Jarrah is a MAILbus application and can be distributed in an
enterprise-wide, even world-wide, network. On the other hand, it can be
installed as a local application to support a number of users on a single
VAX or PC users on a LAN with a VAXserver.
A PID presentation on Jarrah has been prepared and is currently going
through the approval process. In the meantime, for internal use only, the
draft is available at:
SYDNEY::JARRAH$PUBLIC:DECFAX_PRESENTATION_SLIDES.PS and
SYDNEY::JARRAH$PUBLIC:DECFAX_PRESENTATION_SCRIPT.TXT.
The initial release will be VMS only. We plan to release an ULTRIX version
in mid-1993.
Field test is scheduled to begin in early July and will run through to the
beginning of September. Field test sites will be provided with the
software, documentation kit and fax modem(s) for the period of the field
test. They will be expected to install the software on receipt of the kit
and complete a questionnaire on the installation. They will be expected to
make the fax capability broadly available to their users and to complete
questionnaires at different points through the field test. (Questionnaires,
naturally, are faxed to the field test administrator).
The most successful field test sites are those with a recognised need for
the type of product being tested. Therefore we will be looking for sites
that have already decided they want to install, or have installed, an
electronic fax capability. Some sites that are using the existing VICfax
software will be included. Sites currently using a competitor's product
would be ideal.
Jarrah is not dependent on any particular mail environment so we will be
looking for sites that use one or more of ALL-IN-1 IOS, ALL-IN-1 MAIL,
DECwindows Mail and VMS Mail. We also want a split between large and small
sites and between MAILbus/Message Router users and local implementations.
Sites can be using VMS V5.4 or V5.5. ALL-IN-1 sites can be on V2.4 or V3.0.
However, where Message Router is installed, V3.2 is mandatory. (The
software uses some of the new V3.2 features).
If you believe your facility or one of your customers would be suitable as
a field test site and would like to participate, send mail to:
MIKE OFARRELL @SNO, or
SNOC02::OFARRELL
and I'll send you a Field Test Site Information Questionnaire.
We'll select the field test sites from among the returned questionnaires so
as to test in the widest range of environments (and countries) possible.
For internal sites, we're happy to make the software available to any
location (in addition to the field test sites) that would like to use and
comment on the product before its release.
