529.0. "How to auto forward mail sent as SUBSCRIBERS:" by MAJORS::POAD () Tue Apr 21 1992 10:29

    This may have been asked before but I couldn't find it ...

    How can I redirect mail sent to me as SUBSCRIBERS: to another
    non ALL-IN-1 VAX mail account ?

    Doing an Auto Forward in the ALL-IN-1 account forwards mail sent to my
    username only.

    	Cheers

    You can't... the idea of subscribers is to deliver to users of the
    node. So only use it for system messages.

    Alternaltively generate a dummy subscribers system Dist List.

529.2Or write a small utilityAIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCTue Apr 21 1992 16:229
Alternativly you could write a command file that runs in batch periodically and
for all users with autoforward set sends all the mail in the INBOX to the
autoforward address.

A little crude (the mail will arrive with an extra header), but should work.

529.3Use VMSmail to forward the messageGIDDAY::SETHIMan from DownunderWed Apr 22 1992 01:2615
    G'day,

    One way of doing it would be to forward mail from your ALL-IN-1 to VMS
    mail.

    Do the following in VMSmail

    MAIL> SET FORWARD NEXUS::LARS
    MAIL> SHOW FORWARD
          Your mail is being forwarded to NEXUS::LARS

    When your mail is forwarded to VMSmail it will forward the message to
    the new distination.

re .3, .4, and to add to .1

Users who have their ALL-IN-1 mail sent to VMSmail (via appropriate MAIDES
values) will get mail sent to SUBSCRIBERS:. SUBSCRIBERS: mail won't be
forwarded to a VMS account by ordinary auto-forwarding (actually a misnomer
for redirection).

The idea of SUBSCRIBERS: is to send mail to all ALL-IN-1 users (with "known"
MAIDES values), and hence need to know about ALL-IN-1-related things.

Hence there's no point having it forwarded, as the mail would be irrelevant to
any other user.

"Ordinary" mail should be sent with an "ordinary" distribution list.

    I expect that the ALL-IN-1 Personal Assistant coould do wonders with
    forwarding SUBSCRIBERS: mail..... including forwarding it directly to
    the Wastebasket if that is required.....
529.7Why I wanted to do thisMAJORS::POADFri Apr 24 1992 15:1729
    Hmmmm..., The reason I wanted to do this was:

    1) I have an ALL-IN-1 account for entering weekly timesheets and thus
       use it only once a week.

    2) I am not at all familiar with ALL-IN-1 and don't really want to
       learn about it as I am familiar with VAXmail.

    3) I have another account which I use for software development all the
       time and send and receive mail using this.

    4) The sort of mail that is sent to me as SUBSCRIBERS: is System Info
       and S&SC type info among other general info, not just stuff
       pertaining to the ALL-IN-1 account.

       The philosophy here is to send stuff this way rather than keep
       distribution lists of which nodes people would prefer it to be sent
       to.

    5) I would like to know about this mail immediatly by redirecting it to
       my other account, rather than remembering to have to log on to this
       other account periodically to check for mail.

    Anyway, it sounds like it isn't possible, which seems a bit of a shame
    as it would be useful.

    		Cheers

    Why not forward your vaxmail into ALL-IN-1 - you'll find it is a
    far more useuable mail system. I use VAXmail often, but only for
    sending files and one liners. But if you want to do the following

    a) Scroll Back and Forwards within mail
    b) Index across folders
    c) search within Read.
    d) detach attachments

    You need ALL-IN-1... VAXmail can't do any of these. And believe me
    you'll never go back to that horrible one way scroll after ALL-IN-1
    V3.0...

529.9Can't do what?WAYLND::HOWARDBen. It should do what people expect it to doTue Apr 28 1992 17:5717

    Much as I think you would love ALL-IN-1 if you got to know it, I think
    getting your mail destination changed to VAXMAIL was the answer a few
    replies ago, at least that's how I read it. You just forward your VMS
    Mail to your regular VMS Mail account. This should deliver mail more
    or less in real time.

    If this system is an MTS site, you might want to request that the local
    MTS group just change your mail destination to the VMS account where
    you want it. You may have already done this, since SUBSCRIBERS mail
    seems to be the issue. But I don't believe that most sites require
    ALL-IN-1 IOS for MTS mail; it's just that most people prefer it or
    don't know.

Just to make sure this is clear, having your ALL-IN-1 mail delivered to VMS
mail, by setting your MAIDES profile field to VMSMAIL (or VAXMAIL - the two are
synonymous) is different to explicitly auto-forwarding ALL-IN-1 mail to VMS
mail. In most cases, the two will work the same way, but as pointed out
earlier, SUBSCRIBERS: mail isn't forwarded by auto-forward, whereas it is
delivered to a VMSMAIL mail destination.

Also, I suppose I should support Winton's suggestion of forwarding your VMS
mail to ALL-IN-1. In MAIL, do:

MAIL> set forward "MRGATE::""A1::<username>"""

where <username> is your ALL-IN-1 username.

When I read this when it was originally entered I wasn't at all sure this was
right, so I printed off the note with the intention of testing at a later time.

I have just found the note and teted it. It does not function this way on my
system. SUBSCRIBERS mail only goes to people with the MAIDES field set to
ALL-IN-1 I believe (well it certainly doesn't get there with VAXMAIL or VMSMAIL)

529.12SUBSCRIBERS: doesn't go to VMSMAIL, as you sayIOSG::SHOVEDave Shove -- REO-D/3CThu Jun 11 1992 18:2913
    Yes, that's true.

    The idea is that SUBSCRIBERS: means exactly what it says (or, what you
    could take it as saying) - all "Subscribers" to the ALL-IN-1 IOS
    service. It's assumed that users who re-direct their mail to VMSmail
    aren't really ALL-IN-1 subscribers.

    I think it was intended to be used for messages specific to the
    ALL-IN-1 system ("Try the new XXX menu option"), not for messages to
    "all staff" or the like - I suppose you have to set up your own system
    DLs for those cases.

    Dave.
