does anyonw know what "no such file" means and how it coud have gottne
there. the user does have DCL priv on his ALL-IN-1 acct. but if he had
deleted the files, they wouldn't be there at all, right? i'm leaning
to restoring the account from backups, but have no idea when this
    happened.

wait - maybe its the spring banshee! the weather is getting warmer
here in the great white north (no snow in 7 days!)

    	thanks - ann

It looks like you might have a corrupted disk. Do an ANAL/DISK
to check. Don't forget to practice safe computing if you add
        a /REPAIR to that command.

The "no such file" message occurs when a directory (.DIR file) has
a pointer to a file on disk but that file is missing from the
        disk. Very nasty stuff.

518.3Plan for recovering the lost filesGIDDAY::SETHIMan from DownunderTue Apr 21 1992 02:2231
    Ann,

    Mike was correct of course.

I know that it could be to late and you may have restored from backup
but for future reference I would do the following.

It's a belt and braces approach but I would like to be safe than sorry.

    1. Do a backup of the disk.
    2. Restore the disk (this is an optional step).
    3. Do the analyse/disk/repair

The analye/disk/repair will recover some if not all of the lost files
and places them in <disk>:[SYSLOST]. If you do a dir/owner it will
tell you to whome the files belong to.

The advantage of doing this in your case would be that the DOCDB.DAT
and DAF.DAT would be as they were when last used (hopefully depending
when the corruption occured and what was the nature of the corruption).

Also I would do an analyse/rms/check on the DOCDB.DAT and DAF.DAT to
ensure that the integrity of the files.

The disadvantage of going to the previous backup is that you may not
recover the files when they were last used they could be days out of
    date.

    Good Luck,

    Sunil

    sunhil -

yea, too late, the 3 files were restored from a backup that was about 2
weeks old. this user doens't use ALL-IN-1 very much (his inbox has 272
    new messages!).

i will keep your instructions for when this happens again! i have
    faith.

    thanks - ann
