491.0. "Fetcher not processing all mail" by WARNUT::2H0302::Scarr (I love my PC) Wed Apr 15 1992 10:56

A similar question to this was asked in the old ALL-IN-1 conference (note
2353) but an answer was not given.

A customer is experiencing problems with the fetcher in that it does not
seem to be able to process all messages waiting in the A1 mailbox.

In order to help the fetcher move things along, the customer has set the
batch queue that runs the fetcher to priority 8!. This helps, but does not
clear out all mail (and the users are suffering because of it).

When the fetcher starts, there can be over 80 messages waiting in the A1
mailbox. The fetcher runs and delivers about 5, then stops. The sender
seems to process things ok.

Why doesnt the fetcher process all mail found on the A1 mailbox before
stopping?

Also, if the fetcher is run manually to clear out the mailbox, then left to
run in batch as normal, things are ok...

Cheers,

Andy

    Hi,

Did you check OAMTIMAIL.LOG for any clues?

    Sjaak.
491.2OAMTIMAIL.LOG seems fineWARNUT::DORANMr Ken ShabbyWed Apr 15 1992 12:2615
    Sjaak,

OAMTIMAIL.LOG was fine - no errors. The only thing was that when it
checked for mail, only 5 (or there abouts each run) were seen from the
80 or so in the A1 mailbox.

This may explain why only 5 were processed, but not why the other 75 or
    so were not seen initially.

Or does the initial check not have anything to do with the number of
    messages fetched.

    Cheers,

    Andy,

Sjaak is having lunch so let me give it a try.

    >OAMTIMAIL.LOG was fine - no errors. The only thing was that when it
    >checked for mail, only 5 (or there abouts each run) were seen from the
    >80 or so in the A1 mailbox.

Are you referring to result of OA$LIB:FETCHCHECK ?
This is the number of messages in PENDING.DAT, not in the A1 mailbox.

When there are messages in the A1 mailbox, you will see
"There are messages to be fetch" after the second check. No number.

The fetcher will fetch as many messages from the A1 mailbox as there
are during the connection fase. So messages arriving after
the fetcher starts fetching, will have to wait for the next run.

There is a potential problem when there are messages with low
priority in the mailbox. They will not be processed when new
high priority messages arrive during the fetcher run. Those
will be processed first. So on heavy mail systems, it might
    take a while.

    Hope this helps,

See note 108.*

Or just change OAMTIMAIL.COM such that it will goto the 'check to see if there
is anything in MR ' after it gets out of ALL-IN-1. This will at least make sure
that everything is fetched, it may be a lot of overhead because of the
initialization of ALL-IN-1 several times.
