482.0. "auto-forward ALL-IN-1 mail to X400, How??" by HTSC19::ANDYNG () Tue Apr 14 1992 09:19

One user wants to "auto-forward" ALL-IN-1 mail to X.400 mail but gets
an error "user unauthorized to send mail" and the mail is not send.
But if "auto-forward" is not used, the ALL-IN-1 user can directly send
mail to X.400 addressees. The user suspects when "auto-forwarding" mail
from ALL-IN-1 to X.400 addressees, the mail is forwarded by the ALL-IN-1
postmaster but it is not registered in the X.400 so the mail is rejected.
Registered the postmaster in X.400 seems to solved the problem but another
problem can be caused. This is when mail is failed to send, normally
ALL-IN-1 will notify the sender that the mail is not send but for
"auto-forward" the sender will not receive the notification of the failure
to send rather the postmaster will be notified instead (am I correct ?).

Question:
	How can one "auto-forward" ALL-IN-1 mail to X.400 adressees
and have all the ALL-IN-1 notifications send back to the sender eg.
notification of receiving or failing to send mail etc ??
(This means ALL-IN-1 user sees no difference between auto-forward and
normal sending of mail)

482.1Registered in the gateway?VITARA::REDMONDThoughts of an Idle MindTue Apr 14 1992 09:5311
    I believe that users of our MAILbus X.400 gateway must be registered
    (in DDS) to allow them send or receive mail via the gateway. So if your
    user is trying to autoforward out via the gateway and aren't
    registered, then that's probably the reason why the mail is being
    returned.

    On the other hand, if they just want to autoforward to X.400 mail (aka
    ALL-IN-1 MAIL for...) then a simple autoforward address in the form
    "user @AM@wherever" should work.

Hi Andy,

Can we just eatablish which ALL-IN-1 you're using, as you asked this in the
X400MAIL conference as well? Assuming it's IOS, I'll dive in.

When ALL-IN-1 autoforwards mail received from MR (i.e. remote mail) it will
maintain the original Sender's name on the envelope. So if I send mail to you
and you have AF to an X.400 address, the envelope still has my name on and not
yours - so *I* have to be registered to use the X.400 Gateway! (At least I
think that's how it works - I'm not sure how adding Postmaster 'fixed' the
problem. Also, I think for local mail AF'd off the system, the original Sender
will be maintained.

I didn't quite understand the rest of the question - which notifications are
not being returned to the user? Which user?

482.3clarify the problem !!HTSC19::ANDYNGThu Apr 16 1992 04:1126
    I have just talked to the user and there is some misunderstanding.
    Now the question again:

    	Original	Auto-Forward			recipient
    	Sender		ALL-IN-1
    	                account
    	--------	-----------			------------

	X.400 or  	ALL-IN-1 user that              X.400 addressee
    	VAX mail or has been registered
    	ALL-IN-1 or     for X.400 mail
    	IBM user or
    	other ...
    	mail

    Note: the original sender may or may not registered for X.400 mail
    	  only the ALL-IN-1 account user used for "auto-forward" mail
    	  to X.400 addressees is registered for X.400 mail.

    What should be done in order to auto-forward the mail from any user
    throught an ALL-IN-1 user to an X.400 addressee ??
    For example, does the customer need to register all the original
    senders' names for X.400 mail ??

482.4sorry, ALL-IN-1 version .......HTSC19::ANDYNGThu Apr 16 1992 04:134
    The customer uses both ALL-IN-1 version 2.3 and 2.4 ....

Because of what I said in .2, my understanding is that you will have to
authorise all of the senders.

482.6impossible to register all users in the world !!HTSC19::ANDYNGTue Apr 21 1992 12:068
    The user complains that it is impossible to register all the senders
    since they are coming from all over the world (it is a big network with
    many many users). He complains this is a limitation of the ALL-IN-1.
    He requests for a more feasible workaround as this is quite urgent for
    him because many of his users complain that they cannot send mail.

    Andy,

    The requirement to register all users is not to the best of my
    knowledge imposed by ALL-IN-1 but rather by the Message Router gateways
    such as MR/X so it is not a limitation as such of ALL-IN-1 as your
    customer believes.

    I would suggest taking your request to FORTY2::MAILBUS for more help

482.8Clear as MUDMSDSWS::DUNCANTo boldly go..Where no one daresTue Apr 21 1992 17:4820
    I've been trying to do what I think is the same thing.

    Node A and B are part of the same network but A can use any mail
    system. Node B is Using ALL-IN-1 IOS. Node C is across the X400
    Gateway.

    User Darryl on Node B sets auto forward to user Lee on Node C. If user
    on Node A sends mail to Darryl on Node B which is auto forward to Node
    C. This will fail because the POSTMASTER account would have to be in
    DDS to be AUTHORIZED to use the gateway Right???

    Once I added the POSTMASTER to DDS I was able to do the above, but the
    message that was forward to Lee on Node C did not have ANY header
    information.  I'm not sure why.

    Anyway, this is the way it worked (if you can call it that) for me.

    Regards,
    Darryl

        You could always use the AMTS system, to create a new message and
        attach the incoming message to it. In that case only that user needs
        to be registered.

482.10Can I have the steps of the workaround ??HTSC19::ANDYNGWed Apr 22 1992 11:5214
    reply .9
    Since I'm a novice of ALL-IN-1 and know nothing about X.400 mail and
    the MRX gateway and AMTS, would you please show me the steps of the
    workaround as suggested in .9 so that our customer can follow it.
    Thank you !!

    By the way, in order to auto-forward ALL-IN-1 mail to X.400 ,
    sender must be registered. I'm wondering if this is the requirement
    of the X.400 or the requirement of the MRX gateway.

482.11What about...SHALOT::GEERDESWed Apr 22 1992 21:498
Starting to read the ALL-IN-1 documentation about AMTS. The basic idea is
that the POSTMASTER runs a command procedure, from which you start a script.
In this script you create a new mail message with the TO being the
auto-forward address. Then attach the original mail that came in and send it off.
Similar to .8 .
