456.0. "OA$PRIMARY_NODE value " by NCCODE::HARRIS (oooppps) Thu Apr 09 1992 19:56

    hi there!

    somehow at my customer site 1 of the nodes in a 2-node cluster has lost
    the value of OA$PRIMARY_NODE. it is now the node name, not the cluster
    alias.

    according to the installation guide the value for OA$PRIMARY_NODE is
    set by A1V24START.COM after installation is complete. now, if i modify
    OA$PRIAMRY_NODE myself to the cluster alias, what effect will it have
    it the system is brought down and ALL-IN-1 had to be restarted?

    there was some hardware maintenace done (etehernet board replaced and
    some recofiguring done to replace a corrupted image (don't know which
    one)). somehow this has affected a few little things in ALL-IN-1.

    anyone know of any reasons how/why the value of OA$PRIMARY_NODE could
    get changed? besides the obvious of someone doing it by hand.

456.1Check DECnet startUTRTSC::SCHOLLAERTHalf Dutch - Half BelgiumThu Apr 09 1992 20:3415
    Hello Ann,

    OA$PRIMARY_NODE will contain the cluster alias when the
    logical SYS$CLUSTER_NODE exists when A1V24START runs during
    system boot.

    SYS$CLUSTER_NODE is set during the startup of DECnet during
    the same boot.

    Its not advisable to change the logical "manually". Better
    to find out if/why SYS$CLUSTER_NODE is not there.

    Hope this helps,

456.3OA$PRIMARY_NODE for complicated configurationEEMELI::SALMINENI'm just a singer in an ALL-IN-1 bandWed Dec 09 1992 09:3219
	As far as I understand the correct definition of oa$primary_node
	logical, the main rules are:

		OA$PRIMARY_NODE is equal to

		nodename when local MR is used

		MR-node when remote MR is used

		cluster alias when cluster alias is used

	But what is the correct definition for this logical name to
	different nodes in a network with several single ALL-IN-1 nodes
	and a cluster (where ALL-In-1 and MR is started in some
	nodes only), and the other single ALL-IN-1 nodes are going to
	use the MR in the cluster nodes?

Hannu,

As your analysis shows, OA$PRIMARY_NODE should be set to the name of the node
which runs the Message Router which will deliver the mail to ALL-IN-1. (It was
invented before cluster aliases so that replies would work, even if MR did not
know of all the nodes in a cluster.) So it must be a node which the MR network
knows about.

So pick a node which is well known in MRMAN; if you use defualt DECnet, pick
the one which will be running MR.

Does this mean if I send a mail from vaxmail to
the following

OA$PRIMARY_NODE::MRGATE::"ALL-IN-1 Username"

it will ALWAYS get to the ALL-IN-1 username ?

A related question

How often is Message router defined without Message router gateway ?
