446.0. "GOLD G failed with localized editor" by TLAENG::LINITDA (Linitda Sooksomstarn @TLA, ISE/Thailand) Thu Apr 09 1992 03:44

Hello all,

     We are using VMS/Thai V5.5(base on V5.5), FMS/Thai V2.4, A1/Thai V2.4.
In A1/Thai V2.4, we intergrated ThaiEDT as a localized EDT editor.

Here is the problem, In WP or EM menu, we use Create to create the
document and invoke GOLD G to get the document, from here the menu

                Get Document Menu
     SP Scratch Pad
     DOC File Cabinet Document
     VMS VMS file
     UDP UDP key Definition
     NOTE Get a note,.....

Select either one of these would result to EXIT from A1 to the
     DCL command line.

If the editor is WPSPLUS, it works fine, but failed with ThaiEDT.

Any thing related to this problem, VMS 5.5, FMS V2.4 ????

Any of your idea & suggestion would be highly appreciated.

     Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Linitda

    also.

Kindly give me some pointer, please...

    Linitda,

I have never heard of such a problem and the lack of response so far
indicates that it may be fairly rare. It might help if you could
provide more details about what happens. Does the form appear asking
for the document, note, or whatever? Is there an exit message given
like access violation or the like?

It might be helpful to obtain a trace of the actions taken by ALL-IN-1
to get an idea of exactly where the failure occurs.

Is there any chance that there is a customization which could be
affecting this? It seems rather doubtful, of course. Does using the
/NOCUSTOM qualifier fix the problem, for instance?

    Hang in there,
    don

Don,

    >Does the form appear asking for the document, note, or whatever?

Yes, it does. When I invoked Gold G and the form appeared, I invoked
VMS and the following form displayed..

           Include a VMS File
     VMS file name: [linitda]test.txt

Right after I press <enter>, it just simply exit from A1 , don't even
have any access violation or the like....

    >Does using the /NOCUSTOM qualifier fix the problem, for instance?
     No, it doesn't.

The following is the a1trace.log that I invoked Gold % to trace what
happended, it seems that something related to editor buffer. BTW, I used EDT as
    an editor.

Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Linitda

    Hi,,

These lines indicate that there is a lack of quota. Which one? I don't
know. But check the users UAF-paramters. One of them maybe to low. On
the other hand, problems can arise when the SYSGEN parameter MAXBUF is
    too low.

If you can't find out, please post an example of an UAF record.

    Sjaak.
446.5A couple of 'popular' quotasBUFFER::VICKERSIf it helps a customer, DO ITFri Apr 10 1992 16:466
The FILLM or BYTLM quotas are usually the ones that affect this sort of
operation. I believe that the minimum suggested values are 100 and
    36000, respectively.

446.6a word from the ALL-IN-1 V2 DPE (EDT/WPS) editor integratorSKNNER::SKINNERI'm doing my EARSFri Apr 10 1992 16:4817
The editor interface logic does not "supress" fatal errors that are signalled,
such as your ACCVIO or your quota problem. When they occur the ALL-IN-1 main
image will do image rundown and drop you out of ALL-IN-1.

You may want to check your version of EDT for how it calls the get_text routine.
There is an "unprotected" call and a "protected" one. You might want to choose
the protected call and recode your editor. Something DID go wrong during the
reading of your input file [ALLIN1.SOURCES]A1LINK.COM, or you wouldn't have
gotten the ACCVIOs. Maybe the quota problem helped out, but you might want
to determine (through the debugger if necessary) if the ACCVIO happens in the
get text routine or in the editor's IO processing routine, and report a bug if
you find the text routine at "fault". Somebody's code (whatever is linked at
PC=0058DE55) tried to read location 1C, and that caused the ACCVIOs. 1C looks
more like a length or an offset than an address, but that's what the code
developer would have to figure out if you end up looking that deeply.

Hello

I've checked SYSGEN parameter MAXBUF which is 5000, FILLM is 100 and
BYTLM is 600000. Those seems to be okay!

Marty, please help enlightened more on this. Many thanks.

Anyone that has VMS V55 & A1/V24 installed, please confirm me that
you have no problem with GOLD G in EDT editor.. Thank you very much.

Thank you & Rgds,

446.9One crude way to trace quota usageBUFFER::VICKERSIf it helps a customer, DO ITWed Apr 15 1992 15:129
Chasing quota problems can be a real pain. One technique that can help
is to use ANAL/SYS to examine the process in question as the event
    transpires.

Use the SET PROC/INDEX for the process in SHOW SUMMARY list and then
keep doing SHOW PROCESS to observe the effects.

    Good luck,

In addition to Don's reply about using ANALYZE/SYSTEM, there is a tool
called MONQ available from the TOOLSHED NOTES conference
(METOO::SW_TOOLS_CATALOG), note 1361. MONQ is used to "Monitor Process
Quotas & Limits", and can be run against any process on your system. Much
easier to use than ANALYZE/SYSTEM. Just extract note 1361.1 to a file and
invoke it to have MONQ copied to your system.

MONQ is great!, we've monitored the qutoas and couldn't see any problem on that.
I will closely look into the source code and it might be there.

Thank you very much for your kindly help, I'm greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
