437.0. "Unread Count Too High" by YOSMTE::THOMPSON_TA (Tami Thompson @WRO DTN 521-3338) Wed Apr 08 1992 17:56

The ALL-IN-1 new mail counter is not correct. The number is larger
than the actual number of mail messages. I realize that this happens
when there is disk failure and older data is put back to disk.

The question is are there other ways that the ALL-IN-1 new mail
    counter can be too high?

Sometimes custom applications may "play" with the status of a mail
message, and could potentially end up making it "Read" without reducing the
associated mail count. However, in standard ALL-IN-1 it almost certainly
involves some type of "interruption" of operation, or -- as you said --
restoring partial data structures.

   Hi Tami,

Here are a couple of possibilities:

   1. A message may be "NOTED" and so will still be counted in the new
mail counter; put up an Index form, clear the Drawer (V3.0) and
Folder fields, TAB over to the Status field and enter "NOTED",
then press RETURN and you will be presented a list of items found
with that status. Read them to have their status changed.

   2. Since Version 2.3 the ability to file Unread messages into another
folder without first reading has also caused confusion regarding
a user's new mail counter. Even though the message is no longer in
the user's INBOX folder its status is still "UNREAD". Follow the
Index steps above, substituting "UNREAD" for "NOTED" and you'll get
a list of all Unread messages, regardless of the Drawer and Folder.

   Hth,

	Ron
