339.0. "ALL-IN-1 V2.4 / VMS V5.5" by COPCLU::RUNE (Rune Gottschalk @DMO) Thu Mar 26 1992 19:47

  Hi,

  My customer is going to upgrade their VMS system to V5.5 on Saturday. Our
  local CSC can't guarantee that their ALL-IN-1 V2.4 system will run after
  the upgrade but they guess that if the queues aren't "converted or
  updated", the system will probably still run :^)

  Can anyone give me a quick hint ?

339.1Consider VMS A5.5AIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCThu Mar 26 1992 23:218
If you upgrade to full VMS V5.5 then you have to convert the queues,
otherwise they won't work.

There is a version called VMS A5.5 that is V5.5 but with the V5.4
job controller. This should not have the printing problems that V5.5 has
exibited with ALL-IN-1 and other layered products.

339.2My vote: go for it!IOSG::MARCHANTOnly parrots succeedThu Mar 26 1992 23:3514
    Are the CSC only worried about the queues? If so, your customer could
    always upgrade to A5.5 (which is V5.5 without the new queue manager.)

    How big is their VMS system? There are various problems with V5.5 on
    *large* clusters, regardless of ALL-IN-1. In fact VMS are rolling up
    a whole load of patches to form the V5.5-1 release (and the current
    field test version of V5.5-1 will become V5.5-2.)

    Personally, I'd go for the V5.5 upgrade. If problems with the queues
    occur after the upgrade, the customer can always disable background
    formatting.

    Cheers,
        Paul.
339.3Do we have a patch for ALL-IN-1 ?COPCLU::COPRUG::RUNERune Gottschalk @DMOTue Mar 31 1992 15:1810
Hmmmmmm . . .

They didn't upgrade because of our "misleading" feedback concerning the
ALL-IN-1 patches.

Do we have a patch that solves the queue problems ?

In Stars I have read that you need ALL-IN-1 V2.4-1 . . .

Rune
339.4No ALL-IN-1 patchAIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCTue Mar 31 1992 17:4611
There is no ALL-IN-1 patch that addresses any VMS V5.5 problems. It seems that
these problems will be fixed in VMS V5.5-1 and an ALL-IN-1 patch will probably
not be required.

I have not tested any of this so the truth may be a slight variation on the
above, but VMS V5.5-1 should fix most if not all of the problems.

It is currently planned to be available sometime in April, but I do not know
the exact date (or even if an exact date has been set yet).

Terry
339.5How could they even mention a patch . . .COPCLU::COPRUG::RUNERune Gottschalk @DMOTue Mar 31 1992 18:066
Hi Terry,

Thanks for the more detailed desciption. How could they even mention a
patch ????  :^)

339.6VMS V5.5-1 does not fix the problem :-(AIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCTue Mar 31 1992 22:5013
I have just found out that VMS V5.5-1 does not fix all the problems. The VMS
problems will not be fully fixed until VMS V5.5-2. I have no idea of the
schedule.

Based on this news, I would now recommend waiting for V5.5-2, or if you HAVE to
got to V5.5 then go to A5.5. Upgrading to VMS A5.5 on a non-cluster system
is a little tricky, but you can probably find out how to do it from the VMS
notes conference (VAXWRK::VMSNOTES - KP7 to add it).

Terry

P.S. This is the first time I have done the KP7 thingy, so if it don't work
I probably messed it up ;^}

SOURCE: Customer Support Center / USA

VERSION INFORMATION:

     Information Applies to: VMS, Version 5.5

QUESTION:

Should I upgrade to VMS, Version 5.5?

ANSWER:

The two biggest issues reported with VMS Version 5.5 are:

        1. Problems with the Distributed Lock Manager

        2. Job controller problems with ALL-IN-1 and third
            party symbionts, e.g, INTERLEAF, GRAYMATTER. These
            problems are not totally understood at this point.

VMS Product Management plans to announce VMS, Version Version 5.5-1
to customers by the end of March will customer shipments beginning
in late April. This release will contain fixes to the Distributed Lock
Manager (see below for details) as well as fixes for other problems
that may cause crashes or data corruption.

As of March 20, we do not know exactly what will be included in VMS,
Version 5.5-1. It appears that the fixes to the Job Controller will
*not* be included. When we have more details on the contents of this
release, we will update this article.

Distributed Lock Manager
------------------------

The US CSC has a patch, CSCPAT_1011 which corrects several problems
related to the Distributed Lock Manager. Europe and GIA will need to
obtain these patches from the SPE VOID patch distribution system.
Please reference the following articles which are all contained in the
V5_VMS database:

     CSCPAT_1011 Patch Information [INTERNAL USE ONLY]

     LOCKMGRERR And CNXMGRERR Bugchecks Occur After Upgrade To VMS V5.5

Job Controller
--------------

The patch(es) to fix the job controller issues are not yet available
from Engineering. When they are, the US Customer Support Center
will be notified immediately. We will make the patch(es) available
through the CSCPAT Utility.

Guidelines
----------
Here are some guidelines to help determine if a customer should
upgrade to VMS Version 5.5 at this time:

   o Most of the issues have been reported on very large clusters.
     There do not appear to be any major issues with stand-alone
     systems. Therefore, if the customer has a stand-alone system,
     we expect no major issues with the upgrade.

   o Customers with systems which make major use of the job
     controller (have a lot of print/batch queues), but would like to
     upgrade to VMS V5.5, should answer NO to the question in Phase 6
     that asks:

        Do you wish to upgrade to the new JOB_CONTROL at this time? [NO]

     This leaves the system at VMS Version A5.5.

   o If a decision is made to upgrade to V5.5, and the site concerned
     is a large clustered site, or the site runs ALL-IN-1 or a 3rd party
     symbiont, then you should get the customer the following patches:

        PATCH #         Fixes what issues
        ---------------------------------
        CSCPAT-1011     DISTRIBUTED LOCK MANAGER ISSUES
        CSCPAT-1012 JOB CONTROLLER ISSUES (this patch is *not* yet
                           available!!!)

   o If a decision is made to upgrade to V5.5, the upgrade/installation
     procedures and the batch/print documentation supplied with VMS
     Version 5.5 should be reviewed very carefully. Directions should
     be followed explicitly throughout the upgrade process.

   o Review various STARS articles in the VMSBUG, V5_VMS, VMSDP, VIA,
     and COMM databases using the search string "5.5" to ensure that
     the customer is aware of other possible issues that have been
     reported with this release.

     Customers have access to any articles that are marked
     CUSTOMER-READABLE and READY via DSIN or DSNlink ITS if they
     have a valid VMS contract.

339.8Anything more to do than disabling b/g formatting?NZOMIS::THAZHATHEMon Apr 13 1992 00:588
    For an ALL-IN-1 programmers benifit, can somebody explain what
    specific ALL-IN-1 functions are affected? For example SEND_JBC,
    A1SUBMIT etc.

    The actual components (scripts, forms) may be too many to specify.

    Is it safe to say (339.2) that disable background formatting is the
    only thing needed? SEND_JBC is used in other places as well.
339.9NoneIOSG::NEWLANDRichard Newland, IOSG, REO1-D/4AMon Apr 13 1992 11:356
No ALL-IN-1 functions are directly affected. Functions such as SEND_JBC
are used to create jobs. The problems discussed in this topic occur after
the job controller decides to process a job.

339.10Check Wordperfect also!EEMELI::SALMINENHannu Salminen, PTG -FinlandWed Apr 29 1992 16:235
