| No, it is NOT true that ALL-IN-1 is just one rather large and
complicated DCL procedure. This 'fact' was stated by certain
'engineering' types (they had Computer Science degrees so I never could
determine how they got to be engineers) back in the V1 days.
ALL-IN-1 was NEVER written in DCL but in V1 did have a lot of DCL
procedures included with it. It has virtually eliminated its use of
DCL. There is some still in use for the programming and management
functions but not enough to cause slow performance.
ALL-IN-1 is written in a variety of languages but the most prevalent is
BLISS-32.
ALL-IN-1 may seem slow when compared to more hardcoded and simple
minded applications. The reason for ALL-IN-1's less than lightening
response is that it is so flexible and molds itself to suit the users.
There is no other computer system which gives as much of itself to
assist its users than does ALL-IN-1. Nothing else comes close to
providing the respect that humans deserve. All the modern client
server software treats humans with thinly disguised contempt. It's
faster but certainly doesn't have the respect for mere computer
illiterate human beings.
ALL-IN-1 is usually slow to the point of being painful ONLY when placed
into situations where there is not enough resources. It does require a
fair amount of memory and I/O bandwidth for proper service to its
users. However, it takes far less than the more modern software like
the DECwindows applications that were promising to bury it a few years
ago.
I realize that you didn't ask for the lecture on why ALL-IN-1 is so
good but you got it free of charge,
