187.0. "Customize the SMD option?" by SEWNSO::PEACOCK (Back in the saddle again) Fri Mar 06 1992 15:05

I'm investigating a request where the customer seems to be trying to get
something similar to our ELF utility - a quick method for finding people
(phone numbers, mail addressing, etc) when in ALL-IN-1.

The customer wants to view the following attributes from their mail database:
	Employee name	Node ID
	User ID Department
	Division	Phone number
	Building Location

It seems like this should be and extension to the Search Mail Directory option.
With SMD, searching DDS, you can see only the Surname, given name, Department,
and phone number. I know that ALL-IN-1 Mail provides something similar to this
(and I'll be talking with Gozer about that!) by accessing the callable
interface to DDS.

What things need to be kept in mind when applying this to the Search Mail
Directory option?

Another request was for the ALL-IN-1 DDS interface to support adding
fields to hold such things as the user's PROFS id and social security number.
Won't this require a change of the Profile? What are the arguements for
either doing or not doing this? Is there an easier way?

Any help, suggstions and code-pieces :-} appreciated!

    Barb,

I moved your note from 117 which was all about CMS and appears to me
to have no link to SMD.... hopefully you won't hit me too hard!

This is the same question Leah asked me yesterday - are you Ex-Calendar
    Girls on the same project?

Andy,

Thanks for moving it. One of these days I'll get better at noting with
the DECwindows interface for notes!

RE: Leah. No, we're not on the same project. She just "lobbed" it my way for
further investigation.

Now, ye DDS guru, what's your opinion?

    Barb,

Of course it can be done - the functionality is already there on the
GOLD V form off DIR SMD (DDS$INDEX$VIEW).

No more info til I see what bribery is on the table (:==:)

I'm sure this will require lots of time spent at our system research office!

I'll be talking with you soon.

Thanks,
Barb
