157.0. "Indexed or Sequential Searches" by KERNEL::COOPER (Suzanne Cooper UK Customer Support (833)3502) Tue Mar 03 1992 10:00

Hello,

I can't seem to find in any of the previous notes files what I am
looking for.
As always, I have a customer who wants to have a definitive answer,
on Indexed or Sequential Searches. The Manual (ref Application Programming
Guide page 4-14) on Optimizing the Performance of an RSE states that Using
EQS, ENS or BEGINNING will do a indexed search.
The Notes at the bottom of the page then state that that only a EQS
or BEGINNING when searching the key will do an indexed search.

It (EQS ENS and BEGINNING) or (EQS and BEGINNING) that perform a Indexed
search.

Are there any exceptions to the information in the manual.

If you look at the V3.0 guide, they have removed the note at the bottom of
the page 4-14. That page has now become page 16-11.

Hope that helps.

As far as I know EQS and BEGINNING are the only ways of getting an indexed
search. However, even this is not guaranteed if you use complex OR conditions
(AND is OK) or if you dont supply a valid/correct key of reference

Hi,

It's not quite as simple as that (what you specify in the RSE). Some "special"
datasets (ie those that don't simply map RMS files) will never do indexed
searches, and it's possible (although I can't think of an example) that can
only do indexed (ie specific key value) "searches", regardless of what you
put in the RSE. Just something of which to be aware...
