The second edition added a chapter on Capacity Planning, and was renamed the
BOIS Performance and Configuration Guide.

For this third edition, new chapters have been added to cover new products such
as ALL-IN-1 Desktop for DOS, ALL-IN-1 MAIL for CCT/DOS/Windows, DECwrite,
DEC/EDI, and third-party applications such as Dun and Bradstreet Millennium,
Lotus 1-2-3, dBASE IV, Cyborg Payroll, and Ross Systems General Ledger.

The guide describes:

o How to measure an office application system's performance

o How to implement a capacity plan

o How to position these products on the various VAX platforms

o How to size a system to meet specific customer needs

o How to configure the system for optimal performance

o How ISAPG evaluates the performance of various applications

It also includes the results from the tested applications.

142.1ISA P&C in Bookreader formatMRKTNG::SLATERMarc, 264-6309; Beyond this place there be dragons.Tue Mar 31 1992 19:2989
The ISAPG Performance & Configuration Guide (V3.05) is now available in
Bookreader format!

Please send mail to MRKTNG::ISAPG and we will send you the location from where
the files may be copied. This will allow us to keep track of copies, maintain
an interest list and notify you of future updates.

Three files are available -- the book, a shelf file and a library file. You
will either need all three or just the first two, depending on how you wish to
add this new book to your existing Bookreader Library.

The files are:
	ISAPC.DECW$BOOK - THE BOOK
	ISA_PUBS.DECW$BOOKSHELF	- THE SHELF FILE
	LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF	- THE LIBRARY FILE

Two methods to add this book to your Library are described below:

1) Separate Library files
-------------------------

You may elect to use the Library file supplied with this book in addition to
your existing library file. No changes to your existing Library file are
required. This is the prefered way if your existing library is on CD-ROM.

Copy the 3 files (above) to the desired device:[directory] on your system.

Change the logical DECW$BOOK to add the device:[directory] above as part of a
search list. For example:

$DEFINE/SYSTEM DECW$BOOK node$DUB0:[DECW$BOOK],device:[directory]

Edit the supplied LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF to specify the dev:[dir] where the
Shelf file will reside. This line is of the form:

SHELF\dev:[dir]ISA_PUBS.DECW$BOOKSHELF\ISA Performance Group Publications

where dev:[dir] is the location of the file ISA_PUBS.DECW$BOOKSHELF (the shelf
file). This will define a shelf in the new library called "ISA Performance
Group Publications".

When bookreader is invoked it will search the paths for LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF
files and will find both the 'old' and 'new' files.

Now follow the instructions described under "EITHER METHOD" below.

2) Single Library file
----------------------

This may be the choice if your library exists on disk, rather than CD-ROM.

Copy the 3 files as above.

Edit the existing LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF to include a line similar to that in
the supplied file. This line is of the form:

SHELF\dev:[dir]ISA_PUBS.DECW$BOOKSHELF\ISA Performance Group Publications

where dev:[dir] is the location of the file ISA_PUBS.DECW$BOOKSHELF (the shelf
file). This will add a new shelf to your existing library called "ISA
Performance Group Publications".

Now perform the remaining steps as detailed below.

EITHER METHOD
-------------

Edit the supplied ISA_PUBS.DECW$BOOKSHELF file to specify the dev:[dir] where
the book (ISAPC.DECW$BOOK) resides. This is a single line of the form:

BOOK\dev:[dir]ISAPC\ISA Performance and Configuration Guide

If you now start Bookreader, the new shelf should be displayed at the end.
Selecting this shelf will display the P&C Guide entry. Selecting that will
open the book, which may then be navigated via Contents, Index or HotSpots.
To make most efficient use of the book, ensure you have the 'View Hot Spots'
option enabled.

In the future new Bookreader-based versions will be issued in parallel with
the traditional PostScript-based Guide and VTX/BOSS version.

We strongly solicit and welcome any comments you may have on the P&C Guide.
Please put any comments in a reply to the MRKTNG::ISA-PERFORMANCE-GROUP Notes
Conference in Note 8, or via mail to the Performance Group at MRKTNG::ISAPG.
142.2ALL-IN-1 V3 Results summaryMRKTNG::SLATERMarc, 264-6309; Beyond this place there be dragons.Thu Apr 16 1992 16:2941
Excerpt from Chapter 5 of the ISA Performance and Configuration Guide,
ALL-IN-1 IOS...

The following summarize the results obtained. These results do not
take into account the use of multiple Drawers or the use of the
File Cabinet Server. Further testing will address the impact of
             this technology.

              o Testing of ALL-IN-1/IOS V3.0 results is a 4% reduction in
supported users from the V2.4 results.

              o V3.0 consumes approximately 2% more CPU than V2.4.

o From the above, it can be inferred that systems that are at, or
close to, CPU saturation are at risk.

o Memory consumption is approximately 8% higher on a VAX 6210
running 52 users, primarily due to the large size of the File
Cabinet Server. 2MB of memory was dedicated to the File Server.
Systems running at, or close to, memory saturation are there-
                fore at risk.

o Page Faults are 20% higher but are almost exclusively global
                valid faults.

o Page Read and Write rates are 40% higher resulting in slightly
                higher direct I/O rates.

o Image activation is slightly more expensive than V2.4, however
                it is not significant.

o File cabinet operations are the only functions primarily ef-
fected by V3.0. However, none are significant.

o The drop in performance is primarily due to WPS-PLUS V4.0,
larger named data code and the increase in system overhead to
support the File Cabinet server, resulting in the 4% reduction
of the number of supported users.

In July 1992, the Information Systems and Applications (ISA) cluster of
marketing units were formally reorganized into both Small and Medium
Enterprises and Departmental Systems (SME) under Charlie Christ, and
Global Information Systems under Frank McCabe.

In addition to creating the SME and GIS organizations, a Systems Engineering
organization was created under the direction of Mahendra Patel. The ISA
Systems Engineering Group, under Dick Loveland, will be responsible for
Applications Systems Engineering in this new environment.

Therefore, the ISA Performance Group is now known as the ASE Performance Group.
Our charter, mission, goals, and objectives remain the same.

Our notes file, MRKTNG::ISA-PERFORMANCE-GROUP has been renamed to

The Application Systems Engineering Performance Group is
pleased to announce the availability of the ASE Performance
          and Configuration Guide (4th edition).

This guide is produced by the Application Systems Engineering
Performance Group, formerly known as the Information Systems
and Applications Performance Group, or ISAPG.

This fourth edition has undergone a title change to reflect
the group name change. All chapters have been updated,
therefore a complete new version was produced. A new chapter
discussing TeamLinks has also been added.

          The guide describes:

o How to measure an application's performance
o How to implement a capacity plan
o How to position these products on the various platforms
o How to size a system to meet specific customer needs

             in Chapter 5 .

o ALL-IN-1 DESKtops and the MAILbus Postmaster are
             discussed in Chapter 6 .

o Electronic mail systems are discussed in Chapter 7 . Cov-
ered here are the ALL-IN-1 user agents, DEC MAILworks
for CCT/DOS/Windows, and Message Router's Transport
             Service products.

o Chapter 8 focuses on DECwrite, X-Terminals and the CDA
             services.

o Chapter 9 discusses the Dun and Bradstreet Millennium
Accounts Payable and General Ledger applications.

o Chapter 10 discusses batch applications for Dun and Brad-
street, Ross Systems General Ledger, and Cyborg Systems
Corporate Payroll. It also provides guidelines for tun-
             ing large commercial batch applications.

o Chapter 11 discusses Lotus Development Corporation's Lotus
1-2-3 product and Borland's dBASE IV product.

o Chapter 12 provides information on Digital's Electronic
             Data Interchange product DEC/EDI.

o Chapter 13 provides information on TeamLinks V1.0.

o Appendix A outlines a methodology for sizing a system
for a workload made up of a mix of the applications pre-
sented in this guide. It also references an on-line ver-
sion of the sizing system available on VTX/BOSS as part
