75.0. "Auto Forward Question" by ISLNDS::GRANT (Carol Grant dtn 229-7025) Fri Feb 21 1992 18:06

Have a user who is upset with the amount of time it takes to
get his ALL-IN-1 mail. He has his ALL-IN-1 mail auto forwarded
to his vaxmail account on another cluster.

When he auto forwards this way it goes out thru the router
again, but I can't find any documentation on how auto forward
    actually works.

We are running V2.4 of ALL-IN-1 VMS v5.3-4.

Any help or pointers will be appreciated ( I have done a search
for this question in the mailbus and ALL-IN-1 notes conferences)

    Regards,
    Carol

75.1Depends how it is addressed...AIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCFri Feb 21 1992 20:5317
If the user has auto-forwarded the mail using the @MRGATE form then the mail
will get put on the sender queue, when the sender runs it will get transferred
to message router for that node, it will then get tranbsferred to message router
on the remote node (which may be more than one hop) which then transfers it
to MRGATE, which then puts it in his VMSmail. I am not supprized it it takes
a few minutes :-)

If the autoforward is addressed in the form _NODE::USER then ALL-IN-1 will
pass the mail to VMS mail on the local node and deliver it immediately. The
down side of this is that if the mail can not be delivered at that moment
(e.g. remote node not available) a non-delivery will be returned. The route
via message router will keep retrying for a considerable time (100 tries
is the default I thing).

The choice is speed or durability ...

75.2Simpler solution...SCOTTC::MARSHALLPearl-white, but slightly shop-soiledMon Feb 24 1992 14:585
Assuming the user simply redirects ALL-IN-1 mail to their own VMS account,
you could get rid of the auto-forward, and set their MAIDES profile field to
VMSMAIL. That way the message gets delivered to VMSmail first time round...

75.3Same drawback as autoforward to VMSmailAIMTEC::PORTER_TTerry Porter, ALL-IN-1 Support, Atlanta CSCMon Feb 24 1992 18:1513
Scott,

Good idea, but won't the user' local VMSmail have to forwarded as well?

Setting the MAIDS field to VMSMAIL will deliver to the user's local VMSmail
account, which must therefore be forwarded to the remote address. If the
remote node is not currently reachable a non-delivery will be generated. This
means that this option has the same drawback as auto-forwarding to a VMSmail
address.

Or have I missed something?

Hi Terry,

>> Or have I missed something?

No... my answer wasn't directed at the base note, just an observation on a
similar problem. The first sentence of my note said "redirects ALL-IN-1 mail
to their own VMS account"; I was suggesting an improvement over auto-forwarding
for a local VMS user, not the remote case as described in .0. For that case
your answer in .1 is perfect.
