3708.0. "Switching Between DECWINDOWS (VMS v5.4) and MOTIF" by OLHEAP::JFISCHER (ya-hafta-have-a-habitat) Wed Nov 21 1990 15:23

I need either some directions or a pointer to documentation. I installed
MOTIF on my VMS 5.4 station (look great!), but have need to get back to the
standard DECWINDOWS ('cause some of my tools aren't working properly under
MOTIF - but those are spearate issues). What logical, parameters, data
file, etc. do I need to change in order to 'bounce between' the two
environments? Or can't it be done? -- Thanks.

There is a VUE$XUI_WM.COM in VUE$LIBRARY which will bring up what looks like
DECwindows v2.1.

I have added this to my Applications pull-down.

I don't know if products that don't work under v3, eg, VPA, will work under this
as I haven't tried it.

If you have any success running non-v3 apps under this reply here as I would be
interested.

Simon.

P.S. Don't forget to kill the mwm first :-)
3708.2Need to back out of MOTIFOLHEAP::JFISCHERya-hafta-have-a-habitatMon Nov 26 1990 09:5613
Thanks for the suggestion regarding VUE$LIBRARY:VUE$XUI_WM.COM ... you're right,
it does look a lot like the DECWINDOWS window manager. I tried it, but it
didn't fix my problem. I guess I need to back out of the MOTIF environment
(at least until more LP's are fully MOTIF functional).

My immediate problem is DECWRITE. Any time I ask DECWRITE to LINK TO PICTURE,
I get an ACCVIO when the external file is accessed (doesn't make any
difference if I'm viewing existing documents with LINKS, or trying to create
a new LINK). I haven't tried any of the other LINK options. Since I need
DECWDRITE in order to do my job ... I need to get back to DECWINDOWS.

Is there any way of doing this short of restoring my system disk (yes, I
captured an image backup just minutes before upgrading to MOTIF)?

    This is a known problem in DECwrite that is QAR'd.

XUI Window Manager _IS_ the same window manager from version 2. Version 3
is still DECwindows, the change has been from the XUI toolkit/style guide/wm
to the Motif toolkit/style guide/window manager.
