3688.0. "Session dies - need help trouble shooting" by DSSDEV::GRIFFIN (Throw the gnome at it) Mon Nov 19 1990 13:47
On Thursday, last week, I was able to log in to my machine and have the session
start up everything fine. This morning, however, the session dies. Here are
the particulars, I hope someone can point me in some direction to fix this.
DECsystem 3100 running ULTRIX/UWS V4.0-1
Using default window manager
.Xdefaults is modified
The session starts out fine, the xload windows come up, mail and xbiff start,
and about 2 of the 4 dxterms start up. At about this point, the session just
goes away. There are no error messages in syserr, X0msgs, or uerf output.
I moved my .Xdefaults to .Xdefaults.corrupt and copied .Xdefaults fresh from
/usr/skel. This time, login works. So, I make some changes to the pointer
(colors and shape), and to the colors in general. I save the changes, log out,
and log back in again. So the only window I am getting is the login dxterm,
right. With the new login, none of the colors are what I changed them to be,
and a few seconds after everything appears, the session dies.
I ran fverify on the UDW subsets, and everything was clean.
Note that I can log in as root, which has a modified .Xdefaults, and I have no
problems whatsoever. Can anyone point me to any other places to look for
error messages, or maybe you have seen this before???
Thanks,
Beth
