3673.0. "decw V3 crash/hang" by DSTEG1::HOSSFELD (I'm so confused!) Fri Nov 16 1990 09:36

I amhaving a lot of trouble keeping the workstation running.
I have a 3200/w 16m vms 5.4 decw V3.

Most of thtime the ws hangs with no option but to reboot. One of the hangs I
get is when I log in, I type user name (cr) password (cr) and its hung. I have
a clock displayed on the login screen, It is running till the last (cr) and it
then stops. When this happens the logs show nothing that helps me (below).

Another problem is that once in a while the server crashes and I usually get
some info in the decw$sm.log (below). This case I can log back in.

Ps. This note took three tries to complete and Everything appeared to start
messing up after I would attempt to cut/paste the logs.

This is decw$sm.log on a crash and I can log back in

The DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG file you posted is from the time you logged in,
and the server hung just after typing <cr> after the password?

If that is so, then I am puzzled... the log file shows you started the
DECwindows server around 8:58, and then a bunch of connections happening
until 9:02. We then see no activity until 9:15. Then from 9:15 to 9:23
we see another flurry of activity, and then the log file ends. At no
point do I see you logging out. If you logged in at 8:58, did you
really wait until 9:23 before concluding the server was hung?

Tell me more about the clock displaying on the login screen. This is
clearly non-standard, and may affect the situation. Are you doing
anything else that is non-standard?

I must not have the right log there for the server. I will grab it next time
and mage sure it is right. I am pretty sure that the approiate log had the first
9 lines up to the
48 fonts in SYS$COMMON:[SYSFONT.DECW.75DPI]DECW$FONT_ALIAS.DAT;1
and ended but I will grab the next one right!

3673.3Hung againDSTEG1::HOSSFELDI'm so confused!Tue Nov 20 1990 13:0412
I logged in this morning and it hung. I am not sure if it hung after
I typed in the username or after the password. But it was definately running
before.

And the big catch is that there are NO log files from the hang. The only ones I
had where the ones created when I logged in after the reboot.

I saw nothing in the operator log, error log or accounting that indicated any-
thing.

If I can be any help just yell.

3673.5But does it really hang??WELMTS::CRIDDLEWed Nov 21 1990 06:5722

    But does it really hang???

    Have you tried to log in to the system over Lat/DECnet when it it
    hung?

    Why I ask is that from your logs in .0 you seem to be having problems
    with some of your disks.

    I have noticed that with DECW V3, if your default directory is
    unavailable (for some reason) when logging in, the session manager
    exits and your process stays in a hung state running the DECW$WAITFORSM
    image.

    Is it possible that this is what is happening here??

    Rgds,
    Graham

    PS. Is the session manager exiting a known problem, or does it need
    QARing?

Yes I tried the lat and the system is hung I also waited 10 min or so and
