3666.0. "Performance problem since upgrade." by UTRTSC::CAHILL (No bags & baggage to slow me down) Thu Nov 15 1990 07:30

    Hi,

I have a customer experiencing a performance problem with graphics
    output in a DECwindows application.

The customer uses a package called CAMX,which performs molecular
calculations and displays the ouput on a decterm, the application
actually performs the calculations and opens a decterm and writes
    the output to the decterm.

Since upgrading from 5.1-1 to 5.3-1 the customer has experienced a
significant slowdown in the graphics display part of his application.
The calculations performed by the application are performing as they
did before the upgrade. The customer also has the option to use regis as
his output medium, this works ok.He is only experiencing a problem with
    decwindows graphics.

He has a VAXstation 3100 model 30 with 8mb.I have looked thru stars etc
but have not found any information relating to this problem.

Does anyone know why DECwindows V2 should perform so differently from
V1 in displaying complex graphics,or maybe it is simply a resource
    problem,newer version eats more resource....etc

Anyone experienced a similar problem, any suggestions etc...

    Thanks,

    GC.

When talking about graphics performance, we also need to know the
type of graphics hardware in use. Is this an MFB, GPX, or SPX system?

Also, if you run the application to a remote workstation running
DECwindows V1, do you still see the slowdown? (This test would
distinguish between an Xlib/XToolkit problem and a server problem.)

    RE .1

The system is not a special graphics system, also there is no
    DECwindows V1 involved.

    re original note...

Please ignore this note,I have spoken to another user at the site in
question and the original user who logged the problem gave very bad
    information.

For example..he didn't know they were using GKS,they were infact
experiencing a full performance problem etc....

It looks like this is a normal tuning problem and not specifically
    related to graphics.

    Thanks for the response anyway...
