3650.0. "Limit on windowing terminals?" by MAIL::KUTZ (Karla Kutz in St. Louis) Tue Nov 13 1990 12:30

We have run across a really strange problem at our customer site. We have the
following configuration currently.

VAX 6440 with VMS V5.4 and 192 MB of memory
~15 VS3100s
~35 VT320s
~24 VT1000s (4 MB of memory)
~70 VT1200s (15" monitor) (3 MB of memory)

We are able to log into the 6440 with the VS3100s or the VT320s or the
VT1000s/VT1200s in a LAT terminal window with marvelous success.

However, we can only log in the VT1000s/VT1200s in an X session on the
average of about 20 users. We have hit a limit of some sort and this has
ranged between 16 and 25 users.

The strange part is that the number of users has not taxed the system. We are
running around 15% utilization on the average of the CPU. The last time we
attempted to determine the memory utilization was when we hit the limit at
16 users and when doing a SHO MEM, we were only at about 50% of the IRPCOUNT,
LRPCOUNT and SRPCOUNT.

What this is telling us is that we are not bound (yet) by the current system
configuration but perhaps by some parameter in VMS or DECwindows or
something else we haven't thought of yet. Is there some limit within
DECwindows that is going to prevent us from connecting some number of
windowing terminal users?

Since this is a customer site, we are getting desparate. We're starting
to run out of ideas and we're looking for hints.

3650.1How many process slots do you have?CVG::PETTENGILLmulpTue Nov 13 1990 19:1514
Remember that 20 users of DECwindow terminals probably translates to something
on the order of 120 processes:
	1. session manager
	2. window manager
	3. initial fileview
	4. terminal emulator process
	5. terminal session logged into terminal emulator window
The above is created by default when you login to the decwindows environment
without any decwindows profile information.

Now, you might start calendar, clock, and another terminal:
	6. calendar
	7. clock
	8. second terminal session
3650.2High max process countMAIL::KUTZKarla Kutz in St. LouisWed Nov 14 1990 09:342
    I'm not at the customer site right now but we know we have
    MAXPROCESSCOUNT set high. We've never reached that limit yet.

The number of interactive logins maybe ?
Maybe the number of remote logins allowed (set by @SYS$MANAGER:REMACP or
by some SYSGEN parameter).
I do not know from heart if there is a parameter that limits the number of
detached processes.

    MAXPROCESSCNT maybe?

3650.5Some parameter changesMAIL::KUTZKarla Kutz in St. LouisThu Nov 15 1990 15:1544
    We have the number of interactive logins set high. We did run across
    that problem earlier but we got the error that
    Number of logins has been exceeded
    or something like that. We upped that and have not experienced that
    problem yet.

    The MAXPROCESSCNT has been set to a very large number and we haven't
    reached that.

    We received a paper called "Troubleshooting a VT1200/VT1000 Hung,Froze
    or Crashing" paper that is Digital Internal Use Only from a Jeff
    Gilbert in VMS Workstations Support. We experience some of those
    problems but only when we have X sessions going, not for Terminal
    windows (LAT Terminal Window not DECterm). In the paper, it is
    suggested that the following parameters be set to

    PQL_MASTLM  TO 100
    PQL_MBIOLM TO 400
    PQL_MBYTLM TO 32,768
    PQL_MDIOLM TO 40
    PQL_MFILLM TO 8
    PQL_MPRCLM TO 16

    PRCLM TO 16
    BIOLM TO 400
    BYTLM TO 32, 768
    DIOLM TO 40
    FILLM TO 8
    ASTLM TO 100

    We did this Tuesday night (11/13) and brought the system back up and
    were able to login about 31 terminals in X sessions which is a
    definited improvement.

    However, Wednesday during the working hours, the number of X sessions
    able to log in backed off to about 16. We still are not using the max
    memory (about 50%) or the max CPU (about 20%). I still find this
    strange.

    I appreciate your ideas up to this point and we're still looking for
    help.

    Any other sites with this many VT1200s and VT1000s experiencing the
    same problems?
3650.6MACPROCESSCNT & IJOBLIMMAIL::KUTZKarla Kutz in St. LouisThu Nov 15 1990 17:385
    As a follow-up to previous replies:
    MAXPROCESSCNT = 350
    IJOBLIM = 200

    We haven't even come close on these.

    A simple question:
    WHY aren't you able to log in more VT1200s?
    If you were more specific, you would be more likely to get an answer;
    currently, we're guessing at what is happening.
    The more details you can supply the better.
