3630.0. "Cannot login from DECwindows with UAF inaccessible" by ABSZK::SZETO (Simon Szeto, ISEDA/US at ZKO) Sat Nov 10 1990 15:46

    Due to my programming error in DCL, I failed to mount my cluster common
    system disk where I had my SYSUAF et al. defined. As a result I was
    unable to login from DECwindows on my workstation. I also verified
    that the same is true whether I was clustered or not, that is, if I
    defined SYSUAF to be a non-mounted disk, I could not login from
    DECwindows.

    In reference to p. 3-3 in _Guide_to_Setting_Up_a_System_ (VMS V5.0)
    where it talks about bypassing the system authorization file, it says
    that you can only login on the console terminal using the method
    described. I suppose that this is consistent with the inability to
    login from DECwindows. So, I would have to also set WINDOW_SYSTEM to 0
    in conversational boot.

    I searched the directory listing of topics with the word "login" but
    didn't see any obvious instance of the above problem. Maybe it's rare
    enough, or perverse enough, that I may not find it discussed in the
    manual either, although I haven't searched all the documentation.

3630.1Login won't happen thru Login box...WONDER::BENTORude Dog and the DweebsMon Nov 12 1990 10:2311

    	Somewhat similar but different problem....

    	I can't login thru the DECwindows login box with a valid username
    	and password, though through SET HOST or LAT, it allows me to.

    	What's so special about DECwindows Login that won't allow me
    	to do this? Where's the problem?

Re: .1

Are you getting an error message, or does the login just fail?

3630.3Login failure...WONDER::BENTORude Dog and the DweebsMon Nov 12 1990 12:147

    	A message box with "User Authorization Failure. ACKNOWLEDGE"

    	I've checked to make sure there is only one SYSUAF.DAT but as
    	I said before, SET HOST or connect thru LAT works fine.

3630.4It's case sensitive!!WONDER::BENTORude Dog and the DweebsMon Nov 12 1990 14:077

    	May be something with the fonts? The reason I say this is
    	because I tried the password in upper case and was able to
    	log in!! It's case sensitive for some reason! What can I look
   	at to confirm this??

What version of VMS and DECwindows are you running?

I doubt that your problem has anything to do with fonts, as fonts
are only used on output. You are describing an input problem.
3630.6Keyboard problems but...WONDER::BENTORude Dog and the DweebsWed Nov 14 1990 11:529

    	It was the keyboard!

    	Most characters are ok but it turned out that the characters
    	for her password would get corrupted. Though, I'm still not
    	clear on why the password for the system account would only
    	work in upper case????

    	It is VMS5.4 and new DECwindows software.
