I noticed that the DECwindows V3 Session Manager's pause window is using label widgets instead of label gadgets for the text and the Username: prompt. Also, the buttons are widgets rather than gadgets. I can tell because XNeko runs behind them when it chases the mouse, whereas the cat used to wipe the text and buttons out when it ran over them. I infer from this that Motif is making less use of gadgets than XUI did. Perhaps this accounts for its greater resource consumption and for some of the performance degradation? --PSW

This isn't a general problem in Motif; the Session Manager is explicity asking for widgets instead of gadgets for labels and push buttons in the Pause screen and for toggle buttons and cascade buttons in the Message Window. I believe this change was made because of a bug in an earlier version of the Motif toolkit, but it is no longer needed. These widgets will revert to gadgets in the EFT version. -- Bob |
