3552.0. "Foreign Language Support in DECwindows-what additional software do we need?" by CSC32::FORSMAN (Ginny Forsman 522-4731 CSC/CS) Tue Oct 30 1990 19:20

The 5.3 DECwindows User Guide, p7-14 describes "Setting Another Session
Language". It mentions, 'If you have the correct language support installed
on your system, you can use DECwindows in another language, including

DUTCH
BRITISH ENGLISH
FRENCH
ETC...

Also, the 5.4 New Features, p 7-1, mentions additional languages that have
been added, and refers to the 5.3 DECwindows User Guide for more information.

What is the name of this additional software that is required? How do
customers purchase this software? I see we can also customize the
keyboard type, but would the customer also need to purchase a language
specific keyboard? Wh
at exactly is required to run DECwindows in another
language?

I've heard there is a group in Europe that supports this, but what about
our American customers who have a desire to run DECwindows in French?

Thanks for information and any pointers to documentation or sales information
on this.

The additional software is DECwindows V2.0 Language Variants. It
basically is translated base system stuff (OOTB's, Session manager,
help, etc.). I have the installation guide for these beasties but have
never seen a pointer to on-line kits. I'm not sure how/if a US
    customer can get them.

3552.3Contact for DW Language Version kits....JARETH::HORNTue Nov 06 1990 19:0214
The product manager for the DECwindows Language Version kits is Gill
Trotman. Gill works in the UK and is responsible for having the
DECwindows UILs translated into 10 European local languages. She can
    be reached on VOGON::TROTMAN.

The language kits are not currently made available in the US, but there
is no reason why they couldn't be, and it is an idea Gill has been
exploring. For instance, would making a Spanish kit available to
educational systems be useful? If you have any information on what
languages you feel are most appropriate for the US market, Gill would
    certainly appreciate your feedback.

re .3: Along similar lines, GIA and US Area are working the business
issues of Japanese (and other Asian languages) versions in the US,
although that is primarily with respect to availability to customers.
See Les Dole (AKOCOA::DOLE or Les Dole @AKO) in GIA at Acton, MA.

Internally (only!) Japanese DECwindows can be obtained over the net,
I believe, by contacting the kit distribution site in Japan.
